Terry 'ACL' Hammond (11/19/2010)

I'm just getting caught up on the site after being out of the Country for a while.......man.

Terry embodied what "ST-Owners" is all about. I'm sure like many others have posted before, I never met Terry, but I will miss him.

I'm going to hit the mini-mart on the way home this morning and pick up a Little Debbie, just as ACL would have had it.

I was informed by Shelly at the Comfort Inn there are only 12 unreserved rooms left, so if you are planning on staying here, and don't have a room, might want to reserve a room.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

I'm a stranger here but not to Moonshine. I first "talked" to Terry on the MTF board. Back sometime in 2004 he posted on the MTF board about a place that served a good cheeseburger. That got my attention so I asked him where and he said just come on to Casey since Moonshine was hard to find. I said "Not to worry. I have a GPS." Terry still insisted I come to Casey but being hardheaded I was convinced I could follow my GPS anywhere. You know what happeded. Of course I got lost and had to stop and ask a local mowing his lawn for directins. Hence the quote "GPS wont go to Moonshine but I do" . After taking his advice and riding at least 10 miles (well maybe it was a mile) on freshly graded river gravel I came to a power pole with a small arrow pointing to Moonshine. I still beat Terry to the store. I was waiting on the log when he pulled up. My first thought was "This is one big S.O.B." But he immediately put me at ease and had me thinking we had known each other forEVAR. I have heard Terry tell this story innumerable times and I had to laugh each time. Terry said lets do this again and I agreed. And that is where MLR was born. And I have made every one so far. And I will see you guys there in 2011. Already made my reservation at the Comfort Inn.
Yep....ALL who have attended Moonshine have heard that story...many times. People and the events surrounding people are what made up who Terry was. Unlike many....he was able to share his experiences and made the people who were part of a particular event....come to life. I'm glad you got lost....and found. :)

Best

PS thanks for being one of those bigger than life characters in one of Terry's stories!

+1 Thanks for posting Jerry.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

Its 115 degrees, we have been running in the UT desert for two hours and Terry suddenly pulls off at a boat ramp. Being last in line (as normal) I get to the bottom and see Terry wading into Lake Powell in full gear, minus only his boots and gloves. Well the rest of us stripped down to minimal public acceptable and piled in too.

It was great, a bunch of grown men in the swimming hole laughing like fools.

Well, one person (Jay, of course) decides he just has to jump off a rock into the water and is quickly followed by everyone but me.

I watch as one after the other, they all jump off the rock, only one thing wrong, Terry is gonna do it wearing all his gear, helmet included. Now, you may not have thought of this, but I did. Helmets are made with styrofoam liners and that stuff floats.

I yelled at him to take the helmet off and Terry being Terry waved me off, I then yelled, at least hold onto the chinstrap and he did, and he lept...

Afterwards he confided that he and is helmet almost went opposite ways with his head attached when he hit the water but he still had a blast!

Chris as well as the fun we had in the water was the story he told us...
He had been going out here for years and years and had always wanted to get his rear wheel in the water of the Colorado... This was the first time he was ever able to get close enough to actualy do it and instead of just dipping his wheel in we spent the better part of an hour floating swimming and laughing.
A truly unforgetable moment for me.

George....

That was a great moment....when Terry scooped up your Granddaughter and did the raffle. Terry looks at the ticket and says, "ok, we are raffling away this baby".....yikes!!!

Here's the link....Terry, that special "give away" baby...and Gramps....

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

Sam and I were very fortunate to meet Terry last year at NatSToc and we both remember him as a fantastic guy who was passionate about riding and loved to share his adventures with us.
He will be sadly missed by all.
Our condolences to his friends and family

Well, I wasn't on here Friday, I was too busy at work... and I was too busy to get on this weekend... and now I get on here today and find this out.
My condolences to the family. I was seriously thinking about getting together with one of my Arkansas buddies and coming up to my first Moonshine this year, and one of the things I was really looking forward to was meeting Terry... now I won't get that chance. I am so sorry to hear this, prayer to all the family and friends, and I felt like a friend and never even met him.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

Terry would always be "running the show" at Moonshine....whether we knew it or not. It was very clear he was leading the way. On the morning of the Moonshine event, everyone would meet at the hotel and start heading for the Moonshine Cafe. Before the first flight of riders left the parking lot, he'd talk a bit, turn to the Christian Motorcycle Association leadership for a prayer and then....like "Dad" would stress that we all ride safely to Moonshine. He'd be back and forth and all around all day long. Here, there...everywhere.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

What was that ride to Moonshine all about? Fellowship! The past two years, the event was gifted with great weather...well, that's relative of course. Here's a shot of one of our small band of like minded riders on the Talimena Byway. Fog that travel day....left visiblity poor at best. My ride home from Casey to Dallas after the '09 Lunchrun.....13 hours of solid nasty hard blowing rain.

In the early years...there are many stores about snow, rain, ice....really bad stuff. :D The ride to Moonshine has generated 100s of stories over the years. Maybe a new thread with those stories??? Getting to Moonshine....was very important!!! :)

There's already quite a few in the Moonshine sub-forum. Probably wouldn't hurt to look through those, lots of funny stories...

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

I do have a story I'd like to share...

I planned on making the 2009 Moonshine, I don't remember if it was work or family issues that got in the way but I had to cancel.

Terry thought I was going to be there and had a name tag made for me, I didn't even pay or request it, he just felt I needed one... man this is tough to type..

ok... so, someone saw the nametag and told him 'Terry, I think Joe's last name is Norris, not Morris'.... LOL.. well, I think he got a little red and put me on his radar as he had a new one made up w/Norris.

Someone got me the 1st name tag, I can't remember if that was clmixon or maybe tankereng... but, I got it and had a nice laugh about it.

Terry PM'd me and said he had a new one made up ... I told him 'no sir, that's not the one I'm gonna wear, my name is now Joe Morris'.. to this day the correct one is upstairs and will never see the light of day... the RIGHT one is on the bike and I wear that and always will.

He seemed to get a kick out of that.

Terrys spark for life was felt in his responces to many posts.

A friend of mine passed on several weeks ago, after a six year battle with cancer. A memorial service was held at one of the oldest mission sites in Califiornia (Mission San Juan Bautista)

After the service, we all gathered outside and sang the Star Spangled Banner,
followed by a shout of "Play Ball"

My friend always did this at the end of each of the partys he often had.

Reflecting on lifes journey of another fellow commerade, is an important part
of our own journey, and helps to keep us focused on what truely is the most important part of life...........RELATIONSHIPS.

This forum performs, and excensuates that important purpose of life.

Yeah we talk about motorcycles allot....but underlining all the reterick, is the
need to communicate brotherhood and share life to the fullest, with love.

Long Live Terry Hammonds memories, in each and every one who listened to him, and knew him!

Peace and Love to all of you whos memorys of him carry on !

I am torn whether to attend today's service, I would rather remember Terry the way most of us do, smiling and being sociable with his many friends; not lying in quiet repose.

Terry befriended the friendless, fed the hungry, and opened his heart and home to complete strangers like he had known them all his life.

As 3pm approaches, the decision to drive the short 30 mile trip to Casey will be a last minute one for me. Whether you see me there or not, I will be thinking of Terry and his family. He will be missed.
