The Paulcb Memorial Coldest Ride, Winter 2023-2024

Yeah, we've got a heat wave happening here too. The temp has been noticeably higher than in the forecast I posted above. Today I went for a ride and the temp stayed at about 59F. Will be warmer tomorrow but chance of rain... in February... which just doesn't happen around here at this time of year.

Heck it's been near 60 or above for the last few days here. it's 10:30 am and it's 57 out now.

We're trying to send a cool wave your way. But all we can muster around here is a high of 40F for cooler temps. We had the near 60sF the last several days.

Coldest ride huh? Not so much this year. I'm taking off the handlebar muffs today since I'd have to get up earlier than I want to see below 30F for the daily lows and the heated grips alone (without the muffs) will handle it for me at that temp. Highs for the next 2 weeks at least will range from high 30sF to around 50F.

I went on my local club breakfast ride again today. Riding around 80 miles round trip, lowest temperature was 21° F and the highest was 36°. No movement for me in the standings, but I broke the tie at 22° ;)
All my heated gear kept the ride comfortable.

Yesterday morning, early, it was down to +6F... but it had snowed Friday morning and there was some melting during the day and then re-freeze overnight and into the morning so not possible to get out. I don't like riding on sheet ice crossing the road at every intersection. Now another heat wave is coming with temps expected to reach 60F mid-week.

I’m back.
First ride of the year. 34 miles.
16 degrees.
Still hadn’t hooked up heat on the new RDL. Everything else on. Grips, gloves, jacket, pants and socks.
I was quite comfortable.
Didn’t set the clock yet after putting in a new battery. It was 10:00pm.

This is just weird! It's still February in central Iowa and it's 76F right now. Expecting 80F next weekend. I'm sitting here in a t-shirt and nearly sweating from being almost too warm in spite of a strong wind outside. The door to the deck is open and the dogs are basking in the sun... until they start panting and then they move to a shady spot.

I don't usually try to predict weather, but I'll make an exception today.

My forecast: spring is closer now, than it was in January.
You're welcome.

And I'm sure you popsicle people will likewise appreciate that I am not competing with any of you to get on the coldest ride scoreboard.

Shoot ( not that im complaining) I saw 72 on my thermometer on todays ride

Yesterday's 7 AM morning ride it was 21 degrees, good for a tie for 8th on the board, so winter isn't exactly over yet

And today was 31 degrees, not at all icy this morning at 5:30 am so no record there, but considering a no fairing bike I'll make myself a prize for just enjoying getting that little bike out on the road again. I'd presume winter is over except not draining my unused this winter snowblower yet to avoid that kind of "did it too early" kind of luck.

I do like the suggestion of a warm ride record for winter. Of course do we win that by hitting the desert in SW USA?

I rode from NE Ohio to Anza-Borrego desert in January 2005. About 70 degrees in the afternoons when I wasn’t skirting snow in the mountains. Won my bike a trip from Cincinnati to home in a snowstorm, nestled in a U-Haul.

and tomorrow it's going up to 67

you got to love Ohio valley weather

That's close to what we expect today... 68F today and edging up to a high of 78F or more tomorrow.

Gotta luv Iowa weather!

Unfortunately today and tomorrow are the days I decided to remove the rear body of the bike to work on my hitch project. But looks like the next week after that will keep from just below 50F to just over 60F. This is the kind of winter I'd expect to see a late March or early April snow storm. Appropriate if it happened on April 1.

For me, winter is over and so is spring. I took my last ride for the next several months on Thursday. It was windy, slowing down from a Gale Warning. Temp was between 38 and 40F. And it was a glorious time.

Friday I had my foot surgery and now I can't even get out to the garage to look at the bike without it being a monumental effort.
