Has anyone tried to adapt cables from a sunroof adjuster? I just pulled a sunroof cassette out of a civic to see if there is a way. Wish I had a junk adjuster to experiment with. Stay tuned

I've read a lot of threads about damaged gears, and only one or two about damaged cables. I assume you are adding to the cable tales of woe?

You might just start a run on old Honda Civics at junk yards.

The gears and cables seem to often go simultaneously. One causing the other to fail. The covering gets chewed off the cable. The cable eats the gear.:thumb:

I would suggest you verify the size (or gauge) the sunroof cables. The 1300 windshield adjuster cables need to because special size. Otherwise the drive gear won't work.
We just performed this maintenance with a mini tech event. Remove clean lubricate reassemble. I also replaced the drive gear.

I have no idea if any auto cables would replace the ones in the mechanism, but one thing you can do, is take a good cable with a broken dog and replace a bad cable with a good dog.

That I have done!

There are a number of threads here about repairing the windshield mechanisms, check them out!

FYI. My cables were in good shape. A little wear on the one.
However not sure what you mean by the covering? These are steel cables in a flexible twisted form.
The real problem here is the drive gear over time struggles to move the sliders because the lubrication dry's up in the cable guides and sliders. It causes the drive gear to skip on the cables. I'm assuming in some cases the drive will chew up the cables and cause fraying. In the posting I printed from the forum it indicates switching the cable locations (left for the right & visa versa). Use cutters to remove the frayed strands.
In my case the gear you'll notice was worn.

In any case it didn't take that long to remove the whole unit. Clean it lube it. Working well now.

So... it’s been 6 years since I’ve done this. Maybe I’m misremembering it!

Dunno. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.....

I did that last winter (2018-19). The cables and gears looked okay. It worked fine for over a year but is now acting up again (goes up but not down). I don't really want to do that every year so I'm thinking of following the procedure outlined in the service manual and replace the entire unit if necessary. I was going to wait until the heat of the summer to do it, but now with Corona killing off the spring season, I might go ahead and move the timeline up.

That's a great option Robert.
The only thing I get pissy about is the cost. But I guess it's justified. One Honda Parts Direct is $404 US. Yikes.
If it's sticking again I'm wondering if the cables need to be removed and reflexed (poor choice of words) lubricated and reinstalled. I would even lightly sand the tracks n sliders. Not sure if you noticed the part describing bending the cables in the opposite direction? This will provide a new surface for the drive gear.
I'm considering this since I have the time with this virus n POIs all closed.

I agree it's pricey (and painful), but to me it's one of the best features of the bike which I use all the time. Many don't think twice about spending 600+ on things like aftermarket exhaust which does little except sound cool, or hundreds on replacement windshields, so I think it's worth it if it comes to that. I will have a look when I get it apart to see if there's something I'm missing. Following the service manual procedure will give me piece of mind that I'm diagnosing the issue properly and not replacing parts needlessly.

Late to the party...I took apart the windshield mechanism today and dissembled the parts...found the gear has some wear but still in a good shape (to me), but the wires are stripped. Wondering if anyone had tried switching the ends of the wires? That is to use the other end of the wires to meet with the gear, and put the stripped part to the other side. Alternatively, I'm thinking to sell the gear to reduce the cost of buying a new assembly.

The inner cable is crimped to to the outer cable, but, it might be worth a try to see if I could cut one up and try swapping out the ends.

Not sure when I would be able to try this, but I will keep it in mind.

As for your problem, if you do try it, you'll need something to epoxy to replace the crimps.

I used the broke pieces from the dogs.

Try a large fishing store, or spearfishing website. Your looking for the crimps that hold the speargun mono line to the shaft.
They are cheap, and you can get a single barrel, or dual barrel type.

On Amazon, there are a few of the speargun crimps like above. Are all of them the same size (diameter)? Looks like they are being differentiated by the weight, 200# ~ 400#, but no diameter is mentioned.

Most hardware stores and/or tractor supply stores will carry them in various sizes to crimp the steel wire/cables as well.
