Why is motor Oil so expensive?

The price of a barrel of crude oil is at all time low‘s. Gas is a little more than two dollars A gallon. But Motor Is five dollars a quart for a regular oil.

Somebody explain that

Work out the price of coffee per gallon if you really want a chuckle.

Coffee I can sort of understand. Beans have to be harvested, processed, dried, roasted, shipped, packaged, ground, filtered, and finally served to me. I can also choose the type and flavor. What I belly laugh at is bottled water. Aquafina, and such. They buy municipal water, RO filter it, UV disinfect it, and mark it up 1000+%. And people have no problem paying $1-$2 for 16oz. That's $8-$16 per gallon. Same people that complain that gas is $3 per gallon....?

If you like cheap oil, as I do, here are some tips!

Once a year sometime around June, ace hardware sells it’s store brand of oil for 250 a quart. You have to look for their monthly sale paper.

I recently bought 5 quarts of oil at Pep Boys with a $10 off coupon. They sell their store brand of oil regularly five dollars For some thing like 5 quarts for $15. With the $10 off coupon I got 5 quarts for around five dollars!

In the grand scheme of things, motor oil cost is hardly something to complain about ($0.0040/mile)... ;)

@ardykay54 is an "enlightened" crude.

As to price... I blame the pandemic. Seems as good an answer as any other given here.

Think about it. Employees get sick due to no protective measures taken to avoid it. They get put on mandatory quarantine and have to stay away from work or even end up in the hospital... or worse. Fewer employees to operate the refineries. Price goes up to compensate for lower production.
Probably not. But it could be. :bigpop: :puk1::smile-popcorn:

Does anyone besides me remember that in early 2020, oil had a negative value? And that scores of oil tankers were being parked in deep water because there was no place to offload it?

(Third week of April, if anyone needs their memory jogged.)

@Trump - Oil prices are nowhere near "all time" lows.

I remember the all time low for motor oil I bought once. Six dollars for a case of 12 quarts of oil at Pep Boys black Friday circa 1990. The brand name was castrol

Bonus post. Here’s a picture of me with Sophie my daughters dog

I was being sarcastic there. Please don't take that seriously. This is where politicians and business executives are the same. They justify their actions by saying things that MAY have an element of truth, just not the truth that applies right now. IF they justify higher prices by saying production is down... down compared to when? When production was the highest it's ever been? They wouldn't say. Of course I have not read that they said this but I've heard similar kinds of "stories" from executives and politicians alike to explain things so I take a lot of what I hear from either with a grain of salt. I can say something never happened... except for that one time when it did but let's not mention that one time.
