It has been dumping ash and has been dark since noon......house is getting hot. Temp has rose at least 15 degrees before we went to bed. Parents were worried....dumb teen age boy just went to sleep...

The next morning was something you never forget.......

I was in So Cal just getting out of high school, managing a gas station for a guy. But, I moved to Coeur d'Alene in '92 and got married and bought a house in Spokane Valley in '94.

I had two trees to remove in the front yard. Fired up the chainsaw and didn't get 1/4 way into the trunk when the chain went dull. Changed to a sharp one and the same thing happened.

I had 4 chains and the second time I took them down to get sharpened the shop owner informed us it was the ash.

Nasty stuff!

It will be 38 years ago on Friday......

Hard to believe it was that long ago!

Last June, my son (Justin), my brother (DaveH) and an old friend of his and me rode up to see Mt. St. Helens. It was worth the trip! :hat3:

FWIW... not a clue. I can tell you where I was when the Challenger blew up, but zero recollection about my location/activity when MSH blew.

I was in England at the time, stationed with the USAF at RAF Mildenhall.

When I was in high school, I climbed Mt. St. Helens with the Explorer Post I was in. As we were crossing over the crater to the summit, I remember thinking that this was an active volcano. What would it be like if it erupted? I later walked around Spirit Lake with a full length leg cast on. No one can do those two things anymore. Sure you can climb to the summit now...but it is a lot lower and not covered with glaciers. And the old Spirit Lake is gone. The new one is totally different.

Definitely worth the trip. I visited last July for the first time and hard to describe except to 'feel' what happened back then.

I was working as a bag boy in Roth's IGA in West Salem. And no, we didn't shut down...even when the ash started to fall. Good Times, Good Times...may they be a memory only.
