What did you do with your ST1100/ST1300 today?

Finished another major service finally, everything but valves and coolant. Added new rubber and rear shock upgrade from Racetech. Work got in the way this week or I'd be doing a ride report instead.

Just some switch failures to switch out...and then put her clothes back on. The red tail one in the middle is new and waterproof, the others were not.

Hello darknes my old friend . Today I took a ride to the furthest point west on mainland Norway. Got to test my newly mounted Rigid extra lights in dark, old , unlit tunnels on the way. They do the job. There on police brackets.

Well tried to go down to Cali today but hundred miles south the rear valve stem gave out and went flat 70 mph. It’s buggered up so will have to have it towed home. At least my tow coverage is premier and up to 200 miles - will have to post pone a day. IMG_4947.jpeg
Update - towed home 108 miles and delivered to my shop in the back yard. Pulled the rim and tire off- broke a bead and c-clamped the tire just enough to replace the valve stem - aired up , remounted. Took it for a spin felt a thumb thump. Brought it back home put on center stand - spun the tire and found a small bulge on the side wall. Tire had less than 1200 miles on it. All because I had it mounted at a mc cycle shop who used cheap plastic core valve stems that failed. Never again, I’ll do it myself from now on and bought some brass core valves. Lost a really good PR4. Of which are hard to find - tough lessons but was thankful how the tire held up at high speeds and got me off the freeway. Small price to live and ride another day.

Made a start on tackling the horrendous corrosion my bike suffered when I lent it to my brother (he lived by the sea). All the subframes were rusty so they've been wire-brushed, treated with Kurust and painted with Hammerite. So far, that's both tipover bars and the front fairing trellis. The brake pipe cluster over the front fender was pretty mangy too.

I've bought a replacement rear subframe as this one is horrible;

To give you some perspective, the other subframes also looked pretty much like this before I worked on them. :rolleyes:

The next major job is the drive pumpkin, rear wheel and very rusty ABS ring, and the rear brake caliper and brake unions. It all looks like it's been sitting underwater.

The bike was immaculate before he got his hands on it, so you can imagine my feelings when I got it back dead and covered in corrosion. I stuck it in a lock-up, and bought a VFR1200X Crosstourer. But the time has come to try and resurrect it. Sadly I don't have the UK equivalent of Igofar to assist me!
 
Yes. It's fixed. Crank position sensor was the culprit. I enjoyed the work but not the cost. My local Honda dealer was 130 per hour and god knows what they would have tried and cost. I'm a wrencher and love doing it. My parts cost was around 1000
 
Tried to leave work on time but as soon as the bike fired up it died :confused:. Drained the battery trying so I borrowed the shop's jump box and got her started. Stopped by Cycle Gear and picked up a new battery. The battery replaced is less than 2yrs old and is the second one from Batteries Plus to only last just past warranty o_O

I got my 1100 in August of '18 and put in an $88 AGM from Walmart. Every winter, no battery tender or fuel treatment, just under a Dowco cover outdoors. The past five springs, and every other time, it has started almost as if it had been ridden the day before.

Mine rarely sits more than a weekend so I was surprised that the two didn't last longer. The battery that was in the bike when purchased lasted for just over 5yrs.
