Here is the plan. Gunnison CO to either Red Lodge or Cody WY. Do the St Joseph and Beartooth, then up to Missoula and across to Lewiston/Clarkson, then down to Walla Walla and head back south from there. Are the forest fires going to make this doable or are roads closed in the area? Just trying to get a feel on which way to go after St Joseph/Beartooth. Not really interested in going through Yellowstone with all the traffic. Been there done that.

Lots of wildfire activity along your route. A big fire around Lolo Pass has occasionally closed Highway 12 in that area. Also lots of smoke in Idaho and Eastern Washington.

As usual, conditions change and small fires can explode given the current drought conditions. Good luck with the ride.

In the past I would typically do a week-long Aug/Sep trip and head to the more western and northern states and always saw forest fires at some point during the trip. I never worried about it but the last couple of years the fires have been at bit more out of control and taking longer to deal with. The above links should help some in trying to plan your routes... I'd say plan at least 2 routes per day and allow you to change your plans quickly if needed.

Good luck on the trip.
