The New Touring Era 21.10.2021

Reminds me of Harley marketing, where the "product" IS the dream, or the lifestyle.
While I've never been an HD fan, their marketing success is irrefutable.
So, go ahead and refute me.
(Big ole Smiley!)

...I see an ad that focuses on everything except the product and I think to myself why are you so ashamed of your product that you won't even show it? Then I turn it off and move on, as I did with this video.
To be fair to Honda, the video was deliberately released as a 'tease', and Honda disclosed that full information would be coming in 10 day's time.

The progression of the lifestyle pitch is, don’t show the product clearly. This plays on human curiosity. And this allows time to develop an emotional relationship first.
The mind starts filling in the blanks that the advertisement provides.
The ad doesn’t provide the fantasy, it provides the seed for each individual to construct their own fantasy. Oh, I think the word is, vision.
Then when the ugly thing is revealed, the self hypnotized open their wallets and sign with no test ride, ST-and the like owners say *****.
As the ST1100 was getting long in the tooth and a replacement was getting obvious, I started anticipating what was to be the ST1300.

As a die-hard Honda and life-long ST1100 fan (I still own my first year BLACK '91) they could've wiped excrement from their boot onto a sheet of drafting paper called it the 1100 replacement and I would've given it a hard look. But when the 1300 was revealed and I saw that it was an evolution and refinement of the concept introduced with the 1100 I was primed to lust after it.

Unfortunately the timing wasn't right for my family at that time and I pressed on with the 1100 - no regrets, btw - and had to wait to satisfy that longing for something new and improved. I'm very happy with my 2012 1300; a bookend of the model line to my 1100. But in 2012 it was still essentially a 2003 bike, as it is today in 2021.

But then Honda threw a wild pitch right into the side of my head with the VFR1200F. That missed the mark on so many levels for me. Owned a V45 Interceptor; loved that. The 1200 was not a VF or VFR as we knew them. It was an oddball mix of design and technology - transverse crank with shaft drive? Weird cylinder layout? Too heavy to be a sport bike. Not enough weather protection for a tourer... Not for me.

So I'm interested to see what this NT1100 turns out to be. I too dislike the "mad bird" / flying panel, Transfomers styling. Hopefully the full reveal will show something a little less radical. Can I still hold out hope that there's a shaft back there ala Super Ténéré ?

Honda seemed to do pretty good with teaser videos before unveiling the Africa Twin and Goldwing. They work and it’s just business. If it doesn’t appeal then we move on.

I understand and appreciate the reasoning behind the advertising campaign. It just doesn't tease me in to wanting to see more as much as it makes me dismiss and ignore the ad campaign all together until there is actually something to see. Kind of a don't waste my time until you are ready to get serious reaction. Using this case as an example, I will most likely ignore any ad that I will see for this bike for quite a while now until such time that I am pretty sure that when I do look at one, there will actually be something of substance to see.

This is exciting!

I think it will be chain rather than shaft, but we’ll see.

Definitely may need a test drive to see how/if it compares to the ST.

If not mad bird I expect "seriously disgruntled bird" at the very least. I'll happily admit my error in judgement if instead it's something gracefully swoopy. Funny though – I clicked a link looking for a pic of the NT1100 Super-Tourer only to see a pic of an ST1300. But it won't be shaft drive and that's a deal killer for me.

I like my ST and won't get rid of my ZRX1200, but if there was only something to do about the godaweful heat that comes off that ST in the summer! I have a 500 scooter, and the one thing I like about is..........just twist!!!! NO! shifting

I've just sold an Africa Twin to get on an ST1300. IMO they are barking up the wrong tree with this model, if it shares much of the same running gear as rumoured. A tourer it will certainly not be, at least not in my opinion.

…aaand it is a chain-drive.
[if the leaks are right].

Looks like a 5 gal. (USG) plus a little bit tank. I'm wondering what the MPG/range will be.

The saddlebags look kinda small.

Not real interested in a chain drive but might be able to put up with it.
