Looking at those nubs, it looks like you could put an eye out with one of them, doesn't some manufacturers remove them before sales

I remove them from customers bikes after installing tires before they get their bike back

Those nubs are not made for Arizona weather. They put those on the tire for Kansas. Change your tires and go ride in 22 degrees and you get 17 more miles out of tire!

Those nubbins were designed and spec'd for the tire by engineers with degrees in the sciences. Who are we to clip them off and alter the design of a factory made product? (That's just asking for trouble, I say.)

I really do believe that those nubbins create a subtle sound that is picked up on local media that sends the speed and location of the tire to the manufacturer so they know how fast and where the tire was used so they can market them better.
PS, they share the speed with local police, so make sure they are removed or you'll get a ticket in the mail.
