Terry 'ACL' Hammond (11/19/2010)

I doubt I will be able to gt off work, but will try. For what it is worth. Those that made it to Putts funeral already know that those that did ride in where more than dressed appropriately in their riding gear. If I make it, I was planning on wearing my riding clothes as that is how Terry knew us. Putt was buried in a Moonshine shirt. That is who he was. No matter how we dress for the service does not matter. Our presence is what counts. If I do not make it, I will be in heavy heart for not doing so. Some things can not be avoided. That is life.

Ride and drive safe for those making it. We are all family and I do care.

+1 I'm on call for a bunch of systems so others can take the holidays off since I always use my vacation during non-holidays..

I never had the priviledge to meet Terry, but correct me if I'm wrong, but a few months ago he had a thread about an early morning dilema with his tractor and grain cart while harvesting. It was very humerous the way he described his situation and I shared it with a few of my farm neighbors. I felt that I could really relate as i was in the middle of harvest myself. I thought to myself that he was a guy that I would like to meet at some future ST event.
My heart and prayers go out to his family at this time of great loss.

I'll be glad to share a room. I'll be dropping Connie (wife) off in Cincy then heading up to Casey. Pretty much same plan as yours.

Just got this sad news in an email from a local guy. I thought it was a mistake... I can't believe it. Terry was such a great guy.
I'm honored to to have known him.

I will not be able to make it for the funeral I have the Holiday coverage at work this week. I know those of you that make it will represent all of us who can't.

My first dealings with Terry were on the phone. He called and gave me a try ordering some tires. In Terry fashion his credit card would not work. For some reason my machine would not recognize his card. It took a couple of days to get it straighten out but we had a laugh about it.
My first Moonshine 2010, I walked up to Terry and said hello. He had a puzzled look on his face and told me that my voice didn?t fit my body. We had a good laugh.

Over the next few days I watched a man smile, laugh, cry, and love every minute of this Moonshine gathering. He was very passionate about this little gathering.

Saturday was a very busy day for everyone at Moonshine. I spent the whole day there. After the store closed it dwindled down to a few guys and Terry. As we sat on the porch and chatted someone would slip off and leave. Soon it was just three of us. Terry, Indypup and myself. Terry and I had some conversations about tractors and he had suggested that we might have a tractor demo if there were time on Saturday. I had mentioned this to Indypup as we were chatting and expressed interest in this also. We continued to hang out while Terry talked to an older gentleman in a pickup. The older gentleman left and Terry came and sat down with us. As we talked he came to wonder why we were still there. Terry had a thing about being the last one to leave Moonshine. I reminded him about the tractor ride and he laughed and said he was waiting on us to leave so he could leave. Indypup and I then got on our bikes and pulled down the road so Terry could be the last to leave.

We followed Terry to the farm for the tractor demo. After the demo he gave his reason for being a farmer which some of you may have heard. He loved the smell of the fresh turned soil. He told us that he would even lend a hand in his spare time to other farmers he knew just because he loved it so much.

Last Wednesday I was working at our small tree farm. I had just dug some landscape trees and was unhooking the skid steer from the spade. As I hopped down from the tractor I could smell the scent of the fresh soil. I thought of Terry and his love of this smell on that day. In two days I would get the news of Terry?s passing doing what he loved. I am still shocked.

I spoke to Terry several more times that weekend and have seen him twice more. Once he came thru Atlanta to deliver the Moonshine picture to me and have supper and at the Flat track at Indy. I was looking forward to seeing him in the spring again, but that won?t happen.

As I sit in a quiet house on this Sunday morning, I shed a tear for Terry ?ACL? Hammond. My wife and I are making the trip to wish him a farewell Monday.

I think the first thing Terry did when he got to Heaven is grabbing Putt and say ?Hey lets go find the big guy and tell him about Moonshine!?

Godspeed Terry you will be missed.

I first met Terry at MLR #2 when a couple of riding buddies (crazyst and boxxrgirl) invited me to go to Moonshine for a hamburger. Always up for a ride, we went to Terry?s house where I met him for the first time. Within minutes he made me feel like I was the most important person in the world and that he was a better person for having met me. What a wonderful gift he had for doing that and sharing it with everyone he met.

I made it to several more MLRs, always looking forward to seeing Terry and hearing some of his stories/adventures. He always admired MY riding accomplishments even though he had ridden as much or more that I had.

The last time I saw him, he gave me a Moonshine dog tag and I promised him I would wear it on the IBR in his and Moonshine?s honor.

Terry touched my life like no one has ever done before - he was just that kind of person - honest, kind, genuinely interested in you and with a heart as big as the sky.

Gonna miss you sooooo much, my friend. Moonshine won?t be the same without you.

May you and Putt enjoy endless sunsets together.

Just heard the about Terry. Such sad news! My prayers go out to Cindy and the family.

At last years Moonshine Terry told the story about when he was a kid and a guy on a motorcycle told him about his long distance riding and Terry was "hooked". I thought that was a great story. I will always remember that when I think of Terry.

Carole and I just landed in Dallas. We will be leaving in about an hour for Indy, so we should be in Casey about 1830 nor so.
