When was the last time the valve clearance was checked? I had similar issues on my 1991 ST1100 and all valve clearances were very tight. Like could not get a .0015" feeler gauge in. Just a thought.

Hi all, bike firing n running ok. I've reinstated the stopcock whilst at it. Starts on the button.. Should be ok now (touch wood). thanks for your input and advice. Dave

i have been round that area many times on various bikes but never encountered it.. will keep my eyes open next time..

IIRC, You'll probably have to go over Hard Knott or Wrynose Pass to get there.

The 3 switchbacks about half-way up were a real 'thrill' for sure.
Fortunately I did not encounter any traffic coming from the other way.
