St1300 weird overheating

Also after checking the above recommendations, Is the inlet side of the radiator and the outlet side with the fans on have a difference of temperature, if they have a significant difference it tells you the cooling is happening as it should. If not there is something not allowing the cooling process. Plugged fins like stated above will make a huge difference and I have had that happen without the temp going above three bars, what was happening then was the fans were coming on to frequently.
The fans should be running well before the temp is out of control. MidLife is spot on about "Both of them"

i once had an old car that I (in my cheap resourcefulness :doh1:) removed the thermostat to cure a slightly high temperature. The car immediately started to peg the temp gauge. Replaced thermostat and all was good. If water flow is to fast then not enough heat transfer takes place in the radiator.

I read a book written by Smokey Yanick, owner of the "Best Damn Garage In Town". He described the thermostat as more than just temp control. It is a restrictor that keeps the heat pressure in the block and heads from transferring to the radiator, for example when you shut your vehicle off when it is overheating and then the steam blows out because the pressure in the cooling system equalizes and overcomes the cap pressure.
If you get a chance it is really great reading, it also documents his cheating at Nascar racing, which by itself is worth the reading.
Just worked on a Corvette that did what diferg described last week, pulling the thermostat doesn't work well.

and I finally found the problem. thermostat. strangely, the thermostat remained open, and miraculously because of that, he knew how to raise the temperature in place.

and just to mention, he raised the working temperature properly, after 4-5 minutes it was three bars. that's why it's a little strange to me. radiator removed, checked, excellent flow rate.

Yup, yet another frozen open thermostat ;)
Notice the crud that is on the barrel, it turns fuzzy and starts grabbing things, and then sticks in the open position.
Its VERY important that you use the correct coolant, and the bottle MUST indicate SILICATE & PHOSPHATE FREE - meets ASTM D3306.
Another thing you much inspect/check/clean is the insides of the pipes on the radiator for loose black paint. Remove any that is found or it will clog things up again quickly.
Lastly, DON'T over tighten the clamps on the pipes, as they are really soft, and you can easily damage them.
If you find someone has over tightened them, and caused them to become egg shaped, you can repair them with two ball peen hammers (big one and little one) insert the ball end of the large one inside the damaged pipe, then gently tap the face of it with the smaller one, this should true things up for you.
Good find, ride safely.

Thank you.
Today I cleaned everything from the black paint on the radiator, and I will use red g12 antifreeze, it covers the ASTM D3306 standard.

PROBLEM TOTALLY SOLVED

after viewing the service maual, the hot thermostat must be opened 8mm. mine was open 5 mm, so neither open or closed. and with that we solved the problem.

THANKS TO THE ENTIRE TEAM FOR THE HELP.
