ST1300 Trunk Boxes other than Givi?

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

The best part about the Hondaline top box is the spoiler and the high-mounted brakelight. MUCH safer in my opinion. Worth the money so you lower your chances of getting rear-ended. Here it is on my bike:

The box is $599 and the light with spointer is $409?!!!:eek:4: My God that's expensive!

Two HJC full face. No way it'll even hold one and a half.:)

This may seem like a silly question, but are you putting the helmets in on their sides? The E460 holds two that way (see picture), and the V46 should, too.

Mark,

......ah....umm.....well crap............two years and now you tell me! I'll have to try that when I get home.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

Yes, the Hondaline topbox was excrutiatingly expensive. That's why I initially bought just the box. It looked great and was very functional. Then, with my "economic incentive check", I purchased the spoiler. Now it looks even better, and I am a little more confident that the vehicle behind me can see that I am braking. In the end, well worth the bucks! Now I need to work on some side lighting.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

Prior to installing the Honda top box, I rode in what was probably the worst crosswind I'd ever encountered. We actually had to stop briefly. I've ridden in some pretty bad ones with the box (even in the last month,) and don't perceive much difference. There is some additional surface area due to the box, but it's a small percentage of the total side area of the ST1300. I guess 40 mph crosswinds are bad, either way, but I don't feel it's any worse with the top box.

This is good info., particularly coming from a guy who hails from
Wichita, KS. I have heard that Wichita is the one city that has more wind than Oklahoma City. You ought to know.

Your point about the top box being a small percentage of the total ST surface area is a good one. Thanks again for the input.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

Being the frugal guy I am I also went with the Bestem 2012. Heck for $59 it's a steal. I mounted it myself and if you knew my mechanical skills you'd be impressed (it was easy even for me)

So far it has functioned perfectly and we have used the heck out of it, but no long trips yet. My wife doesn't even mind the cheesy pad cause she has back pads in her jackets which adds the needed cush. i would think one helmet would fit in there, but not two, but we don't stick our helmets in there anyway, we use the trunk for other stuff like raincoats and sweatshirts etc.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

I bought the Hondaline top box from David Silver Spares. I couldn't bring myself to buy the spoiler. Too much $ for what it is.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

The chances of getting rearended have nothing to do with trunks or lights. The after-excuse is always the same: I didn't see him. ALWAYS have an escape route, as in enough room to jump left or right as you watch that car approach in the mirrors. Trunk lights and blinking lights make the rider feel good about safety, but don't reall do much.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

I agree. For the money, Bestem can't be beat. I've logged 30k with the Bestem, mounted 4 bungy buddies on top and carry gear up there. Easy on and off and at 45L holds lots of stuff. I can buy 10 Bestems for the price of one OEM trunks. Not much more to discuss here.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

That's a plus. I bought my ST with 2000 miles on it and it already had the givi 46 on it and it only holds one helmet. Since I usually only ride with the box when Katherine is with me it'd be convenient to be able to put two helmets in the box. I put one helmet in the box, another in one saddle bag then have to cram two jackets and anything else we have into the last saddle bag. Maybe I ought to look at putting the givi on the blackbird and ordering one of those for the ST.
I've ridden all over the world, never felt I had to secure my helmet. Just strap it in full view, pricey ones too. I wouldn't criticize someone for locking it up, but I just don't see it as a problem.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

+1 on the Bestem. Have had one mounted for 25k miles. Open and close it 2X/day. No problems in 4 yrs, and would buy another one in a minute if this one broke. Can't see spending the extra money for anything else. $80 for color matched and delivered, enuff said.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

Shad SH-50. Two full face helmets easy. Built better than the Givi 50 since I now have both.

Re: ST1300 Trunk Boxes

I used the GIVI boxes (E360, E460) on my Bandit. I thought about transferring the top box to my ST, but then I found a used Pan-European box close to home and purchased it. I've had it on the bike for about a month now and feel I made the right choice. From what I hear, and based on the keys, GIVI makes the Pan box so the quality is the same as their production hard bags. My old GIVI bags are somewhat scuffed so I know from personal experience they'll take a beating.
