design fault of the long key in a short keyhole vulnerability
you can get short keys for the bags/glove box ; COLE DA23 ( ace hardware )
Use only the long keys in the ignition.
design fault of the long key in a short keyhole vulnerability
GeniusThats correct. I use a non HISS key all the time for ignition, panniers, seat release because I know how easy it is to bend the original accidentally. I keep the master HISS key on a bunch with other keys and my Alarm fob. I use a non-chipped key by itself in the ignition. In order to start the bike I have to place the handle of the HISS key close to the handle of the non-HISS key in the ignition. Its starts without any problem at all. The bunch of keys then get stowed in the lockable pocket.
Notes - the bike will keep running without the transponder - no time limit.
If you turn off the engine at the kill switch, the bike will restart without the transponder key within a certain time frame. I don't know what that is, but I remember posting it here sometime ago. Ill come back and edit this if I find it.
If you turn the engine off with the ignition you can only restart the bike with the HISS key close by the non-HISS key.
Key blanks with chips in can be purchased from David Silver Spares. They cost around ?18. They are not programmed - you have to do that yourself. You can program up to 4 HISS keys. If you buy a new HISS key, then you have to reprogram all the keys that you have. Programming is easy, but you need to make up a simple harness, described on jonmapp's post (see below).
If you lose your last programmed HISS key, you are stuffed ! You have to have the ECU unit replaced which is expensive.
(I'll now go away and see if I can find some more references for you ).
[EDIT]
Here's a link the post I made a while ago - it has other useful links including jonmapp's post on how to reprogram
Here's the link to the David Silver Spares Website and the HISS blank key - ready to program - at least that is the one that I bought. Always worthwhile checking with them that it suits your bike before you buy though ! The part number is 35121-MBW-601

.;Hi guys, for future reference in the UK, I have been buying all my spare keys for my bikes (and most other things) from Keys Galore in Gloucester Avenue, Camden, London NW1 8HX Telephone 020 7586 9741. They are online for phone numbers etc. All I do is ring them with the key number off the lock and they will post it very quickly.Really wasn't trying to be insulting or anything...

Hi there,I bought my ST with two keys but only one was safe to use as the other had a hairline crack in it. There were a few sellers on the *bay site selling replacement keys with the correct uncoded chip in them. I bought three keys. The maximum number number of extra keys you can code to the ignition is three. It was a simple job of finding a suitable you tubers video on instructions for coding blank keys. It was simple procedure. The only extra rimes you need are A 100 ohm resister and a couple of wires to connect into the diagnostics connector block. There is a sequence for turing the ignition on and off and bridging the wires. It is down to you to decide if you wish to pursue this route and then find an instructional video clip to go through the sequence. My UK cost was less than £10. I have good set of spare keys.Hi Guys,
Wounder if you can help me with info about keys i have a st1300 2004 model, bike came with 2 honda ignition keys, the one i have been useing has a crack in it so it,s ready to break in half.
Now the black plastic bit at the top has a honda cover one side and it,s cover the other side is missing so key looks hollow now it works fine but i need to replace, i have just bought 2 blanks off ebay, when they come can i take them to a key cutter and get them cut will they work in the ignition.
the key i am using at the moment is the original and it doesn,t look like it is coded or anything, or is it and basically if i buy 2 blacks and get them cut will they not work.
your info would be greatfully appreciated.
Rob
Just come back to this thread after about 6 years as it has just been bumped, and re-read the info in here.
Some points for UK HISS leys which have become slightly confused in the more general discussion of key cutting.
Please note that this applies to HISS chpped keys only.
It is possible to buy a key for a few uk pounds that looks identical to the Honda OEM key, but it doesn't have a chip fitted. So not a lot of use really for an HISS system. Check before you buy. Keys with chips will cost over £20.
There is no limit to the number of times you can reprogram a key.
To program a key (new or old) you must first have a key which starts the engine.
If you program one key, all of the other keys you intend to use need to be reprogrammed as well.
A maximum of 4 keys in total can be programmed, and these can be reprogrammed repeatedly.
If you dont have a key chip that starts the engine, you cannot program a key that will (by normal means)
If you buy a new ECU, make sure you get a key that goes with it !
I now have 4 programmed keys. One that i use. Two in items that i invariably have with me when riding. One at home.
I once mislaid a key and was unsure whether it had been lost or taken. The first thing i did was reprogram all of my other keys - so that the lost key would not start the bike. Later, the lost key turned up (in a shirt pocket that had been through the wash a few times). I reprogrammed all of my keys to make the found key worked again.
John you sound like the go-to guy for this, I just bought a 13 with only one key and want to buy and programme at least one for a spare. Can you point me to some replacements please?
Thanks Stuart, that was very helpful.
Hi. Above is a link to a YouTube video I made about sourcing and programming kesy for my St1300.
Hope it helps.
Thanks for the reply and links John. Yes the bike is HISS equipped, blinky red light and all. I have found a local vendor selling keys that contain an IP46 chip so I'll give that one a go (and it is cheap if it doesn't work).Do New Zealand bikes have HISS ? I assume so. If not, you don't need a chipped key.
Honda dealers should be able to get hold of a blank, chipped key. Be wary of the internet keys - they look the same but may not have a chip inside. Chipped keys cost around £22 UK. David Silver spares have them, but they are UK based (or USA now).
Two links: for other info. Only relevant if your bike has HISS though.

Hi Hound,
Yes there looks like in the right hand side the left side is empty, i live in bridgend s wales.
So when i get the blank and get it cut if i carefully get that little transponder out and glue it in the new blank it should work ok is this right.
thanks
