ST1300: Fuel Indicator Problem

You mentioned the OEM bulbs work fine. I thought I came across a post that you made last year that said that while the OEM bulbs would work the left side was slow to go back to low beam. It was like the right would drop right away but there was a second or so delay before the left would go back to low.

Correct. All ST1300's do that, I think.

Well, for now, the point is moot:

I called the local-est dealer today about my sub-harness recall. The service manager looked up my VIN and suddenly blurts, "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!!!"

"WHAT?" I say, anxiously.

"You have three recalls to get done. You haven't done any of them!"

I knew about the one, but how could it be that I've lurked on this board for 7 years and never known about the other two?

I'm a total idiot. :nuts1:

The grounding issue, the proportioning valve but what is number 3?

You will have to let me know. The only other recall that I know of was done to all the 03s before they left the factory.

'03s had an issue with a wire rubbing against something grounded and blowing the FI fuse.

The list of changes by year also includes the recalls that applied to each one: CLICKY

  1. Main Wire Harness (Ground)
  2. Main Wire Harness (Chafing)
  3. Brakes

Ok. Maybe I need to check on the chafing issue on my bike. I know the brakes and the ground plug were done. I guess I thought the chafing and ground issues were one in the same. If they say they are different issues I should check on that. Where are you going? I think you said you didn't want to go to HP. How is the shop at Tousley? I know I mentioned that my 1100 was bought there to someone and they said that they were sorry. Now, I would only be getting this done at a dealer. I do all other maint myself.

OK. I'm back.

I just picked up the ST from the shop. They did replace the sub-harness and repaired the grounding problem. PCV was in good order and not replaced.

I've noticed that my headlight-sticking is resolved. So, we'll chalk that up to the grounding issue. Seems to be working fine now. Maybe, just maybe it'll solve the fuel gauge too.

I was surprised as heck when I picked up my ST. I typically don't trust dealer mechanics, but when I dropped off my ST, I mentioned the fuel gauge problem, and they ran through it - quite thoroughly. I was pleasantly surprised. They even photocopied a handwritten note the technician had prepared for me:

  1. Checked meter assbl'y for codes - NONE
  2. Removed fuel sender and checked resistance: Full 4.6, empty 216 OK
  3. Insp. for smooth resistance through travel - OK
  4. Insp. fuel meter level: at full sender reads all bars, empty, sender meter reads 2 bars - OK
  5. Insp. fuel reserve sensor: Continuity between ground and wire OK, Voltage between ground and power 9.4V OK, continuity between sensor/meter OK
  6. After testing, fuel meter is working properly. Filled tank. Reads properly.

I'm really, really pleased with what this tech went through. I'm concerned that he wrote "empty reads 2 bars", though. Empty should read one bar.

For now, I'll have to run through another tank of gas and see what happens when I get to two bars.

Sounds good. Where did you end up taking it? I might check with them to see if mine has all the items done.

Took it to South Saint Paul Hitching Post.

If you call them, and read your VIN, they'll tell you what recalls have been done, or not.

Ok, thanks. So have you changed your mind about them. You didn't seem to keen to taking it there when we spoke about it before.

I was not. I've never, ever had good service there before. But I'll be first to admit that they did a superior job this time - possibly the best service I've ever had. If I can get the name of the tech that did my ST, I'll let you know so you can request him, should your ST need to go in too.

Hope this solves fix your fuel gauge problem . At least you got good service from the tech this time ,that,s pretty rare these days . Good luck and good riding !

Only way to tell now is to ride the tank dry. I better take a long ride today. It's for maintenance purposes.

Darn. Maintenence is so tough. :D

So have you been through a tank of gas yet? Did the grounding recall fix your gauge issue? I assume you have had time to get through a tank or two since the last update. I know I have been through a tank and a half.

Um, er, no. I'm at 187 miles with 3 bars indicated. It's gonna be apparent in the next couple of days.

UPDATE:

It seems that this problem may have come from a faulty ground wire.

I brought my 2003 ST1300 to the dealer, and they replaced the subharness under safety recall, and did say that my ground wire was bad.

Immediately, I noticed the headlight sticking quirk had been resolved.

Today, the fuel gauge responded properly by dropping down to one, blinking tick at 1.3 gallons remaining. My fuel miles-per-gallon has ascended to normal with a new thermostat.

I'm not going to shut the door on this entirely, as Kempo claimed that he has this same problem intermittently. It could happen again. For now, I've decided it may be a good idea to carry an extra quart of fuel with me just in case... :nuts1:

Trying to resurrect this thread from 8yrs ago LOL but this is exactly the same problem as I just had this afternoon.........sat at the side of the road after some coughing and spluttering

It stayed on 2 bars for a long time then started to cut out

I have seen the last bar flashing and a mile countdown but it's just not accurate so I'm assuming my reserve tank sensor is FUBAR or the pump isn't scavenging from the bottom??

Any help great fully appreciated
