St1300 Cut out while riding

Hi Everybody

I hope you are all well.

I was riding my st1300 along this morning and lucky for me i had just come off the main dual carriageway or else it could have been a different story.

Starting loosing power rolled to a stop so i pushed the bike off onto a side road to check everything

the honda hiss light was still flashing and when you press the button for the honda averto alarm the hazard lights flashed to show the alarm activating and deactivating.

The alarm siren also was working.


By this time roadside recovery had arrived

we checked the battery and it was showing fine, we checked all the fuses and they were also fine just no ignition no main lights no power being supplied to start the bike work the radio or anything except for what i mentioned above.

We also checked to see where there was current flowing and so far so good just could not get to the starter switch or anything else with being at the side of the road.

Bike is now at may parents house as thankfully i was passing there house and the honda dealer are going to collect it for me tommorow.

Thinking starter switch as a possible problem what do you think?

For now i have disconnected the battery as the alarm was going nuts.

Could very well be starter switch connections, I had this problem on my GL 1500 Wing about two years ago, something made me check the connections, and spot on, problem solved, connections were loose. Hope you solve the problem soon. Will interesting to know what the cause is / was

Thanks I will keep you posted, i hope its something simple.
To be fair i can't complain i have had the bike since 2008 and its done about 90,000 miles and not had a single problem apart from recovery for the odd flat tire.

There is power getting to certain things so it's got to be a break in the connection somewhere or the starter switch, could only do so much at the side of the road.
Just really glad i was not doing 70 mph on the main carriageway as i don't think the cars in lane with me would have stopped as i had no lights or power and slowed down to a halt.

spray some contact cleaner into both left and right switch pods... being in the UK you folks have issues with corrosion or gunk accumulating in those areas and that would be the first place I'd look.

I doubt its a major fault, when my GL broke down I had a few well meaning people offering their opinions, including broken Cam Belt (the ST 1300 doesent have Cam Belt, TG!), I stayed calm as I could once I had it hauled off home, and went through all the basics that I could think of, and SOMETHING made me pick on the kill switch, hoping yours is an easy find too.

Maybe loosen and tighten the Battery terminals too, make sure you have good connection, I have also had an issue with that before, not on the Pan, but on the Wing. I am by no means a bof, I rely on trial and error :) but you will get great advice on this Forum from guys in the know.
 
You managed to get the Colwyn Bay shop to fit you in so quickly?!?! How much did you have to bribe them? I called them recently & was told they're booked up solid for weeks!

For future incidents (hopefully there won't be any, but still...), I'm on the RAN list and if your bike is red, I've seen you around. I'm based near Prestatyn. Feel free to call.

So, to the issue, loss of power from the motor... FI issue of some type is likely. Did recovery try to read the flash codes? That'll tell you quicker than we can what's wrong.

I'm not actually sure if it's possible without power, but still.

Edit: re-read... no electrical power... check the yellow connector behind the headlights for signs of melting/corrosion.

Your alarm is simply telling you that there's an electrical fault. The reason FI shut down while riding is simply a controlled failure due to lack of current. I've had that on a bike before... FI light comes on, bike goes into limp mode, and then the motor cuts out completely.

Not the Colwyn bay Honda i use Hunts in Manchester and to be fair the lads in Manchester have always looked after me their picking it up in the morning.

I Live in the wrexham area used to live in Ewloe which is where my parents are.

Recovery and myself checked

All the fuses on the left hand side
checked the battery connection and current was 12.48
Current was flowing through all surrounding wires to different points

There seems to be power but it's not getting to everything else.

I just ended up losing revs and then that was it i was 50 mph to 0 in a matter of seconds which was what worried me not everyone behind is going to stop thankfully there was nobody behind me and i had just come off the A55.

it's a bit like the kill switch had been flicked on.

My parents house was nearby so its been recovered to that address for now so if it was at home with me i would probably check a few things.
Garage is picking it up tomorrow and its due a service so i will let them check it over.

The dashboard is dead no lights nothing just the flashing honda hiss light.
Switch ignition on no fuel pump whirring up nothing however there is power from the battery.
Our next check was to test the starter switch but being where we were we could not get to it easily.

Just reviewd my head cam and it was complete loss of power.

Dash went dark sat nav went off and engine cut out and i rolled to a stop but the honda hiss was still flashing.

I will update you as to what the cause is as soon as it get to the Honda dealer.

I ride past Ewloe twice a day, as I work in Liverpool.:)

I've seen a red 13 near Colwyn Bay a few times, hence my assumption. I've also seen a silver one once, not far from home.
 
I doubt its a major fault, when my GL broke down I had a few well meaning people offering their opinions, including broken Cam Belt (the ST 1300 doesent have Cam Belt, TG!), I stayed calm as I could once I had it hauled off home, and went through all the basics that I could think of, and SOMETHING made me pick on the kill switch, hoping yours is an easy find too.
I have found my kill switch to operate incorrectly, if it is in the run position and I press down on the run side, it will kill the motor. Hence, I don't use the kill switch.

I use the kill switch because it's convenient. But I've left the IGN on a few times and once killed the battery. I may decided to wean myself from the kill switch practice and use the key as the primary On/Off. No IGN left On and no key left in the switch when it shouldn't be. DAMHIKT.

The only downside is a second or three needed to get my my phone and mount. I might use the kill switch occasionally to keep the contacts 'burnished'.

This is an interesting one, kill switch wont power the dashlights out, so cant be that. One would naturally assume a dead fuse, (or at least I would) but yes, I would be very interested to know the outcome of this one...
 
Just had a thought I’ve missed the two main fuses A and B which are on the side where the battery is housed and under the starter relay wiring connector.

We only checked the fuse boxes on the left hand side of the bike where the handle is to lift it onto centre stand.

Hopefully find out in the next day or so once it’s at the garage.

Ok, hopefully it is just one of those fuses then. I guess if it is, the question would beg what caused failure, but, as the old saying goes, if it has wheels or wears a skirt sooner or later it WILL give you uphill ;) let's say if it a fuse, and IF the cause of blown fuse cannot easily be ascertained, I guess what I would do is obviously replace it, keep a couple spare, ride it, without any accessories connected, and if she behaves all good, if you have accessories you usually use, plug n play and see what happens....? Anyway, let me not jump the gun...holding thumbs for a quick fix

Hi just thought i would update you all on my situation.

I have just brought my trusted steed back from the dealers and it was one of the main fuses that had gone.

However the actual cause of the fuse blowing was the main wiring loom under the seat where it crosses over and under the left side of the bike.
It was chaffing on a sharp edge on the back of the fuel tank and had cut right through causing the fuse to blow and full loss of all power on the main live feed.

My garage did another fantastic job found the fault quickly and back on the road.

The areas that were rubbing have been adjusted and supported and packed with rubber to prevent it happening again.

The mechanics going to keep an eye out for this with other pan europeans when there in for services.

Out of interest, what's the hourly labour rate at Hunts? And do the give curtosey bikes out? Did you have to pay mileage for the pickup?

Woods in Abergele currently have an ex Honda mechanic, and he's always seen me right, but Hunts being a Honda dealership could be preferable for some things.

Hi Martin, thats great news, happy for you that it was not something more sinister! I must pull off my seat and check mine too. The past weekend I stripped my fairing off to put in fresh coolant, and give the engine a good clean, oil change and general checkover, I was a bit horrified to note that the engine Temp Guage connector plug had melted, upon closer inspection seems like it is only the plug plastic casing that has somewhat melted, the cable seems ok, I decided to not fiddle as everything is working fine and have absolutely no idea how long it has been this way. The exhaust manifold is very close to the temp guage unit albeit the guage is surrounded by a metal bracket...wondering if that bracket is not supposed to have some sort of cover to protect the plug...anyway, I covered it up with some insulation tape in the interim until I find the willpower to remove fairing again, its quite a mission, and probs take it to an Auto Elec to sort out... Pic attached. Ride safe, glad your issue is History! :)

Hunts Honda do provide courtesy bikes which is one of the main reasons i use them as i use my bike all year round as my main transport have done for years.

I have had two pan europeans from Hunts over the years but unfortunately my red one was taken out in an accident, i survived the bike didn't.
I then bought my current one which i have had since 2009 and its been with me ever since through thick and thin.

So making sure i am on road in situations like this is a big deal for me.
Very busy place with a great team who always do there very best.
I normally ride my bike down the day before leave it with them and collect a loan bike then ride back its really only in emergencies such as god forbid an accident or like the other day when i have asked them if they could collect my bike from my parents house after the AA recovered the bike for me.

It was luck that the driver was free and able to accommodate me i had an accident a few years back and after it was recovered to the local recovery by the police they collected my bike a few days later when they had a free driver.

I have been going here for many years and been a long standing customer and i highly recommend them.

They have vans and drivers but it really depends on timing as to if they can collect it quickly as they are normally out delivering bikes to customers all over the country as well so they are always busy driving all over the place.

However yes another reason to use hunts as they offer services such as courtesy bikes, hire bike services, Delivery vans and not many dealers provide services like this.

On this occasion i just paid £120 including vat for two hours labour to find the fault.
Courtesy bike was dropped off and mine collected.

I have not been on here for a while its been nice to speak to you all life seems to take over these days and never seem to have time for things like i used to.
