Article [13] ST1300 - Clutch Replacement

From your description, it sounds like you may be hearing the counter balance adjusters out of adjustment.
This would make alot more sense than your clutch bearings etc.
Also, do you have any coolant leaks? If coolant is spewing out the overflow tube below the front of the lower cowl you may have lost your water pump mechanical seal or bearing.
This would also sound like a high pitch noise if the prop were hitting the cover etc.

No water leaks, never had to replenish the overflow tank. Checked the settings on the balance shafts three times already, so I don't think that's the issue. The motor sounds great. Adjusted according to manual. The water pump bearing sounds like a candidate. Still require a teardown to check that though. Thanks for your response.
 
Hi Larry, finally took the water pump out. Was surprised how difficult it was to turn the impeller. From the spindle side a fair bit of effort was used to rotate it. Turning the impeller side was also very stiff. Upon inspection of the seals, they were rock hard and looked as if they had suffered from really high temperature, they were blistered.
