ST1100Y @ >150,000km...

Every metal idler I've ever seen has a standard bearing pressed into it. Pop it out, order from bearing supplier, press in new. Easy.
 
I’m probably the exception - I replaced my original idler and tensioner bearings and water pump at the 180K service interval when I replaced the second belt. I couldn’t tell any difference between old and new. Go figure… FWIW YMMV

Knock on wood, I've got one that has 184,000+ miles on the original stuff (pump and pulleys) with no issues.
But after experiencing two failures, I've just decided not to push it ... ;)

Do you remember, (I am sure you wrote it down) how old the bike was then? I am thinking the bikes with the lower mileage today are pushing their age, even if everything looks brand new. Just a theory.
Mine has 124,000 miles and previous owner had changed the timing belt at 60,000 just before I bought it. So this is making me think about the water pump et al

How were the clearances? In spec? Does honda still sell the oem gaskets?
Noting to worry about...
#1 IN forward and #3 IN rearward start nearing the 0.13mm, but nothing that requires action yet; rest are well within specs...
Haven't had an issue getting gaskets and grommets yet...
The old ones where definitely already stiff/hardened, new ones almost fluffy in comparison...

Fired it up after sealing everything, belt and valve train smooth and silent... no leaks anywhere... neither coolant nor oil... :cool:
 
Quick question- have you ever checked them in the past (or placed different shims)? If not, that is great that they stayed in spec for so long.
Thinking about it, they might have needed adjustment after the run-in, likely the 24,000km/15,000miles service...
Always checked in above interval, but steady every since...
 
Was this the same bike that was stranded in Morocco during Covid? If so, do you think that played any part in the degradation of the items you changed?
 
Did that grinding noise go away?
And now you've done it... mind-hamsters in high gear... :unsure:
About my other, '94 ST... cause that's the one with:
- a coffee grinder like noise in the valve train (already replaced the ball bearings of the reduction gears over that... no change...)...
- a random clatter appearing briefly and vanishing on the RHS...

Well, first things first... finish the red '00 ST and get it off the lift, then we can haul the '94 in and take things apart to examine...
