ST1100 wheel alternatives?????

Are there some wheels that will fit from other honda products? How about the aftermarket, not that anyone can afford them new? I was thinking along the lines of rear wheel from a sport bike if the center from an ST would transfer in.

Rear wheel?

Front wheels are relatively easily interchangeable, though I don't know specifically about the ST1100 front wheel. Modern Hondas use just a few different wheel diameters, widths, bearing sizes and disc mounting circles.

Chain-drive rear wheels are less commonly swapped around, but shaft-drive rear wheels are likely to be model-specific, I'm afraid. There may be some interchangeability with other Honda shaft-drive models...but there aren't very many to choose from! NTV650, Silverwing, perhaps? Maybe I'm overthinking the shaft-drive complications, but that is what I suspect.

Ciao,

George, from Kingman will probably pick up this thread, he can tell you what fits and give you details. (Seem the GL1500 rear fits, but uses a 16inch wheel.)

AFAIK, the only rear wheel swap possible is between the 17" ST1100 wheel and the 16" 90 or later GL-1500. It's a direct swap except for a wider spacer needed between the left side of thewheel and the brake caliper carrier.

The 160/80/16 GL tire is just slightly taller than the 160/70/17 ST tire. I've put many thousands of miles on the GL wheel on the rear of ReSTored with no problems. Handling isn't quite as crisp but the tire mileage is better.

Have to wonder how the ST wheel would change the handling on a GL-1500?

Twisted, there are shops that will reshape a rim on an aluminum wheel to make it wider. Not aware that anyone has tried that on a stock ST wheel. NO easy way to swap the hub that I know of. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I don't own an ST yet however as soon as my Sabre finds a new owner........ Anyway, I live in the flat no curves state at this time (that's Florida for those who don't know it) and I would intend to perform a taboo act and put a Darkside tire on the ST for commuting. I would like to keep the ST rim with a nice tire ready to go for trips. What benefit is the sport bike rim/tire for the front supposed to have?

I believe the CBR wheel is 17in, as apposed to the 18in on the STs. This would make for quicker turn-in/direction changes. You would prolly loose a little ground clearance too.

Dennis definitely replaced the front rim on his rebuilt ST1100 standard. But he had to do some serious fabricating for the disk calipers and such if I remember correctly. He also found that it makes getting the ST upon on the center stand a lot more difficult. Handling seems to be just fine and he did install much better calipers on the front for better stopping power.

I've considered checking out the entire front end from a Valkyrie. Upside down forks, hefty brakes, fatter tire. If the steering stem is the same, the whole thing could be a bolt-on deal.

This is a major thread resurrection, but I'm curious if this was ever checked out more thoroughly.

I'm considering doing a fork swap but doubt that I would use the Valkyrie forks. One's I've found have been too much $$ for me. I also don't want to slow down the steering with a big, fat front tire.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a ZX14 front end; forks, wheel/tire and brakes. Should help on the stopping side of things! Just not too sure how much custom work it would take. Would probably have to make a new top triple tree, at the least. I do have a buddy with a CNC mill....

George, if you're listening; do you know if the rear wheel flange from a GL1500 will work on the ST? Looks about the same, but I don't have one to put side-by-side with the ST's.

Actually there was a hand full of people that switched out the front forks on the Yamaha Warrior with the ones from a R1. They were for the most part a direct bolt in replacement. The Warrior has a similar sized front brake (dual of course) and a 120/70-18 front tire. I believe the R1 had a 17" front wheel which would give a much broader range of tire choices. The Warrior has an inverted, adjustable front fork and the two bikes (ST1100 & Warrior) weigh about the same.
The ideal thing to do would be to get the entire front end (triple trees, wheel, brake calipers, rotors and forks) from a donor bike and make a stem that would work with the donor triple trees and the neck bearings of the ST1100.
