My Spot gen 2 turned itself off during a recent long ride. It went off toward the end of a 10 hour ride. Batteries were new. I did not get a low battery red blinking light that I noticed but I wasn't looking continuously at it and it was in bright sun. Today I bought new batteries (lithium as always and recommended) and I was testing it today in tracking mode and it turned itself off after about 2 hours and several normal position messages. I wasn't watching it continuously but it should blink red Lo Battery for longer than that. It shouldn't show low battery at all but there is the possibility one of the brand new batteries is bad.

After I discovered it turned off I attempted to turn it on again and it just blinked 1 green when the power button was depressed. It will not turn on.....just the 1 green blink then nothing. I tried 5 times. I pulled the new batteries out and reinstalled the "old" ones which should have been good. It began blinking green as OK but when I sent a Custom message it turned off without going red first.

I called Spot support and they want to open a service ticket but after I get a complete new set of lithium batteries. That's $11 more on top of the $11 I spent this morning. $22 isn't out of the realm of possibility but Spot will replace the unit for $30 flat and a $17.95 upgrade of my subscription for product protection. That's a one time cost of $47.95 and I don't have to renew the product protection in October when my annual renewal comes due.

A new Spot Tracker for $48 is ok with me but I'm still curious of the failure mode I am seeing. Anyone else see something like this?

My SPOT2 was not sending locations and would sometimes power off.
Spent an hour or so with a tech support person I could barely understand.
Ended up with the $49 refurb. Then 2 weeks later, I got the email for no more basic plans. I called and threatened to cancel and got my subscription with tracking for $99.
By the way, the refurb unit is working like it is supposed to.
Good Luck.
