I had two ST1100's, both bought new. I often could not use the side-stand on the side of the road due to road crown. I had to park perpendicular with both of them. I shortened the side-stand on the second one.
When I got the ST1300 I noticed the difference right away. Using the side-stand on the side of the road was never a problem. I always thought that this was a deliberate change.
