She said yes... ;-> (NT700VA)

Good on you. Sounds like she’s decided life is short and why the heck not have some fun.

My wife is down to earth alright. Just that she likes comfort and doesn’t like risk

then again, she did marry me

LOL

My girl is down to earth, uncomplicated character, not shy to grab tools; divorced, the 2 children out the house, she decided to apply for the bike license at the age of 48... :thumb:
Riding her 5th year now, ran her very first bike vacation/long ride, joining the Pan Gathering in Germany on her 500cc Kawa last summer, which she (obviously) enjoyed, but a small naked bike is not suited for long hauls... it's exhausting and tiring... things you won't even feel or notice on an ST...
Observed her riding that NT to the shop yesterday, and she appears quite confident and competent with it...

I can’t get my wife in my corvette, forget about it for ever sitting on the motorcycle even in the garage.

She’s a SUV princess.

Well, sitting on that hump you got on the back of that thing, I can't blame her! Now, if you had something like this:

st1300_saddle.jpg

It might be a different story! ;)

you want “down to earth”?

showed this picture to the SUV Princess, and said I’m going to post whatever you say about riding ot this.....
her response:

“Goto hell”

:run1:

See, she knows you aren't going to convert your bike for "her"...so I can understand her response! :rofl1:

Yeah, right... and those guys are the ones actually wondering why I'm not married... of course... :doh1:

Marriage is an institution designed to protect ones loved one in the form of a public, legal and spiritual commitment and accountability.

Not getting married is like riding on a bike vs a cager....

Might be fun, but less protection

:wave1:

err... but for whom ?! ;)

Some time ago, servicing the FCUs in an office space...
The two female deskdrones chatting up my assistant while I'm up on the ladder...
Suddenly one of the female adresses me:
"So what about you? Are you married as well??"
"Nope... I can spend my money myself... all of it..."

That office went quiet like a tomb... :rofl1:

Alright, back on toppic...
Service time today, draining coolant and engine oil, as I had planned to check valve clearance.
Ran into an issue as the LHS crank-cap wouldn't bulge; slight force, use of the plastic mallet, use of impact wrench, use of heat gun on the generator cover... no avail...
At the end the hex in the soft aluminium cap rounded out, so I'd to pop the entire genny cover, remove the stator inside (for protection) and drill the bugger out...
All cleaned with brake cleaner and air nozzle, re-instaled stator, applied engine bond (no paper gaskets on those newer engines...), put cover back on... now we can turn the crank for checking valve clearance...
That € 15- cap took good 2 hours of my life there, I assume someone once tightened it while engine was still hot...
To get clearance for the forward valve cover removal of radiator and thermostat housing is required... valves were within spec though, also no issues with chain guides and spanners...
Covers with new gaskets back on, both head protectors on (plastic shields, similar to the rubber insulation mat at the ST1100), PAIR plumbing on, air-box back on...
Radiator back on, fixed a damaged thread & bolt, thermostat housing back on, new coolant filled (nice, red Motul stuff), new OEM oil filter, semi synth 5W30 in (which was way runnier then whatever black tar I had drained before... )
Attached the satnav loom and the the 2-way radio power supply (the Kenwood will be located in the aft section) to the quartet harness by using OEM Honda connector shells (will need to restock at Vintage Connectors...)
Still due:
- fork oil
- final drive oil
- hub dampers + spline maintenance
- brake fluid flush/replacement (ABS, linked brakes)
- modifying the Kenwood handheld with an SMA socked to enable use of aux aerial
- replacement of the handle bar (LHS inner weight snapped in half...)
- install SONIC PTT button on left bar

Another service day.
Fork oil change was defenitely due, but went rather uneventfull... the front wheel bearings are victims of pressure wash though, seals dry, bad rumbling can be felt when turning the races with your finger...
Rear end maintenance a different issue, somehow I'd expected such a scenario anyway... still amazed about the neglect those, basically quite expensive bikes have to go through...
Assembly bone dry, the thin O-ring on the bearing-boss worn down to dust, the splines had some lube on, but defenitely no gn-plus... fortunately cought in time, no metal damage yet...
Out of instinct I had already ordered a hub damper set for the NT, didn't expect the bushings been gone at that low mileage....
As the rest is identical with ST1100 spares, I found the bushings and polyurethane O-ring in my stock...
Off ordering parts... to be continued...

Another day in the hangar...
Replaced those 90° aluminum tire valves with OEM rubber ones, rear wheel installed, final drive aligned, silencer/main exhaust installed, worn front wheel bearings removed (replacements still in shipment), new OEM brake pads on all 3 calipers, panniers back on and aligned, preparing to install 2-way radio, aux PTT and BT-interface...
Found havock on rear pads, plus PO had not only installed aftermarket ones, he'd also confused left with right set...

Kinda boring with a Honda though, it fired at the first crank... :shrug1:

Of course there was never any doubt.
Always possible to ommit a connection with all that plumbing and wiring there ;)

Flushing the linked ABS brakes went also smoother then expected; the fluid in the reservoirs appeared clear, but after I ran 2 & 1/2 bottles Super DOT4 trough the system, the liquid accumulated in the bleeder had the intransparent color of peanut-butter...
Common quick-trick by backyard mechs to only replace the easy accessible liquid inside the expansion vessels to "make it through" an MOT... :(
That the old, contaminated fluid causes damage on seals and will lead to malfunction on components is ignored...

Already begun routing power and antenna wires for the 2-way radio and BT-interface.

And... ready for push-back...
Buttoned her up and added the belly deflector last night...
Once the temps raise a bit, we're out there...

Well, it's done...
2-way radio check, GPS cradle equipped with silent blocks, power check...
So she took the NT out for a brief test ride... and didn't show up again for over an hour

Since ze GF reported the top edge of the windscreen being right inside the viewfield one would spot/lookout for obstacles on the deck, I cut it down...

No, not the expensive OEM one of course ;)
Ordered a taller GIVI aftermarket and modified that to 40mm shorter then original.
Low speed, a fine metal blade with some silicone spray on.
Vibration sander smoothened the edges... result looks fine IMHO

Further fixed a flickering license plate ilumination and a stuck turnsignal lever (the PO loved his powerwasher... )

So, the NT700 is fully roadworthy

Well, she likes the rig... obviously a lot :thumb:

She decided to drop the car to use the 'Ville for commuting now and won't stop reporting about the smoothness, the comfy positioning, the well planted ride, the precise & easy cornering, the lack of slag in the drive-line, it's omph at take off... and she's totally fascinated about the auto-lean effect in cross-winds

Welcome to the world of Honda

Well, as the SR-10 onboard power issues are solved, the NT700VA project is officially done

Comms are up and running, nesting inside the "pannier tunnel"... TK-3101 with battery eliminator & SMA-socket (aux aerial inside front cowl), SR-10 with fully stabilized 12V input...

IMG_20200425_092908.jpg

each device is firmly held in place by a camera tripod quick-connector, easing access...

Out and about today, aprox 5hrs training flight...
(her first ride in actual terrain on the NT... guess who's pretty tired now ;))

Home-bound a stretch of motorway, she cracking it up to 100mph... I had to laugh
"...well, had to check how she handles at those speeds..." was her excuse afterwards... :rofl1:
(such pace was just not possible on her naked ER5...)
