Seeking Forum Members Advice

Rental vans over $100 a day plus over $1 a mile.

That is why I said check Penske. I just did a check. I pick it up in my town and dropped it off in the next town over. $309.00 for three days and unlimited no charge milage. You just pay for the gas. You pick it up full of gas and drop it off full of gas. That was for a 16' van with a ramp.

If you pick up and drop it off at the same place, then it was $39.00 a day and $.49 cents a mile. Plus gas.

When I looked at a U Haul enclosed trailer from Ohio to UT, it was $700 for a 3 day one way rental. Way cheaper to go with a Penske van than a U Haul enclosed trailer.

Glad to hear you got it worked out Larry. Riding home will be way more fun than out in back in a tow vehicle!

When I worked at Smythe Buick we went to Stans on Homestead and Kiely for hot glazed donuts every day, is this the same one?
Yep, right next to Armadillo Willy’s.
My wife ran Several of the Armadillo Willy’s for almost 25 years.

one way kills the price, u is about 24 a day for an enclosed trailer. Why would he have to go one way? Why would you need an enclosed trailer, the bike can handle rain or snow on a trailer. He is trying to do it cheaply.

How far up north in California is it?
Anyhow, I'm sure the weather will be better in the spring.
I would LOVE to do 800 miles of riding out West. Never have.
Been there in cars, pickups, 18 wheelers, but never anything with 2 wheels.

I suggested an enclosed trailer because it is winter! Would you want your bike covered in winter road crud? Depending on the route, states spread salt, sand, salt brine, and cinders. If on an open trailer, you would want to wrap the bike in moving plastic. I did this years ago on a cross country move in March. Glad I did. The plastic was covered in salt when I finished the trip. The bike would have had salt in every nook and cranny if I didn't. When I took the plastic off the bike, no salt at all.

Others suggested a one way for the trailer. That is why I suggested the van was cheaper. A local trailer rental would defiantly be cheaper even with the lower MPG of the tow vehicle.

Other than some snow in the moutains of California don't see any in Arizona either.

I'm glad you have a workable solution Larry!

Hopefully Hwy 1 is open when you ride. Hwy 101 isn't as much fun, but if Hwy 1 isn't open, that will still get you close to the coast.

Well this kind of resolved itself.
The bike is safe in a secure garage, on a battery tender, until spring, when the weather warms up.
I will mail a roadside repair/travel kit, tools, plug kit, etc.
Then fly down there for free on my wife’s frequent flyer miles, flush the fluids, give everything an OCD once over, take a shakedown ride to Alice’s, stop by Stan’s donuts, then take the long way home along the coast highway, through San Diego, then take 8 into Arizona, avoiding Phoenix traffic, then home to Tucson.
Being retired, who cares how many days it will take, it’s the journey not the destination right?
This will give me a couple months to start building up my muscles again doing short daily rides.
And…..I will carry my IGOFAR license plate with me on the trip.
:WCP1:
I'm glad thagt this has ll worked out well for you Larry.

I was thinking with enough notice, and judicious teamwork, a series of left coast members could shuttle the bike to you, relay style.

That would be neat to do, but I don't know all the groupies (this group) out your way.

Glad you found a solution though.

Larry is thankful his back doctor is NOT a member of ST-Owners! If he ever has to give up the riding his follow up toy will be a sporty little convertible in his favorite ST color!

The plot thickens....
Things are kinda speeding up, looks like I'll have to fly up and ride back the bike before the end of February!
Chris Zimmerman was kind enough to loan me a Joe Rocket Survivor Suit to use for the trip, I have a new Arai full coverage helmet waiting for me with the bike, I have gloves, and will ship a road repair kit and tools there before I arrive.
The fly in the ointment now is ME.
Not sure how far I'll be able to ride each day since my surgery, and the route seems to keep changing due to the fires and such.
I thought about leaving San Jose, and take 101 to 156, over the pass, and jump on interstate 5 to hwy 58, then either hwy 138 or 395 to get me near Victorville, Mojave, or Barstow.
I was hoping I would make it half way (400 miles) to Palm Springs, then try and find a Hotel, but with all the Fires in the L.A. area, all the Hotel's are asking stupid prices, and are booked up for months in advance etc.
Just wondering if any Forum Members live anywhere along any of these routes, so if worst comes to worst, and I can't continue without rest, maybe I could shelter in place in your garage for the night, then continue the next morning (unless I have to repair something on your ST) :rofl1:
I feel a little uncomfortable asking folks I've never met before for help, but it may come down to that.
I just don't want to get in over my head and get stranded somewhere on the road due to back/neck issues.

As I said in an earlier post just say the word and I'll fetch the bike and ride it to you. Some details like where the bike is would help, guessing San Jose? I can check and see what flights are available. Not sure how much of an issue the fires will be for travel but sure that can be figured out. Let me know.

Are you saying it is in the San Jose area? I might know some CBX guys returning from Livermore in a pickup truck tomorrow who might be willing to take it to Lake Havasu City. If you are interested, contact me ASAP.

Igofar do you have access to a pickup truck. That 650 will ride nice in the back of a pickup. Only down side is having a ramp of some sort to load and unload the bike. I drove out to BFE Kansas and bought a Versys 1000 and carried it back in my Chevy Colorado. With that said back in 2015 I did a fly and ride from Denver to Seattle and bought a 2014 V-STrom with 304 miles on it from a private party. Had a great trip back to Denver. Rode the bike to Spokane for WESTOC XX and then back down the Pacific Coast Highway of California to visit my Mom in Monterey, and stopped at Alice's Restaurant, then home via Vegas to Denver. Three weeks on the road and 3500 miles. Good luck with your trip how ever you decide to go.
