Ok, due to events beyound my control I now have to pull the lock cylinder to get a lock smith to cut me a new key for my ST (Why can't they look up a key codee by VIN??) and I got the plastic trim piece off, but getting to the screws holding the cylinder in has really got the best of me tonight. I finally gave up for hte night, but as wondering if there is a trick to getting it out, how much stuff do you need to remove? I can't take the front plastic off, don't have a key to unlock the left compartment to get to the screws there (I think there are screws there anyway) and I'd just as soon not have to rip off al the tupperware just to get a dang key.

So, any suggestions? For those across the pond, the US versions do not have a resistorized ignition key, just a plain key so it can be cut easily, just got to get the cylinder out.

Why do you have to pull it? My locksmith made me keys easily from the little key code tag. If you do not have that, the Dealer can get it for you.

Chris

My dealer told me he couldn't cut me a key off the VIN  Also I bought the bike used, only had one key, no tag with the key code on it, and my boss lost my keys while I was in the burn center following an accident at work  I'll try calling another dealer, maybe they will be willing to get me a key, although the nearest Honda dealer besides the one in Casper is about 150 miles away :( I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what the deal is.

Geo, remove the top bridge (triple tree) unplug the SW and juST take that to the LS? I know the bolts that hold the SW are special one way 8mm. p#90107-mgb-000 X 2.
I do not have a scanner but I could try to take a pic of the assy and proceedure from the book if that will help. I know you can pull the tree w/o removing half the fairing... I hope.

lemme know asap

A picture would be really nice if you would be so kind. I think I know what you are talking about, actually I do know what the tree is, seems like a lot to remove even at that, but those bolts seem pretty determined not to come out so I'll do it. I think I should be able to do this without removing the fairing.

thanks for the help, pics are nice :D

Thank you

Ok, I'll give my dealer one last chance in the morning, then I'll go with taking the top clamp off, it would have to be easier than all the work involved in trying to get to the screws from the bottom, and if they are one way, which they must be as I had a allen socket in it and it would just slip when I turned, then I am just peeing in the wind anyway. So, hopefuly I will have something accomplished tomorrow night, I'lllet you know how it all turns out.

thanks,
George

Would it be easier to pull the left pocket cover off and take that lock to the
locksmith???

Umm, how would you suggest I open the left pocket without a key? If it would work I'd be willing to try it, as it would be a lot easier to remove, just don't know how to open the lid.

I called two dealers, as well as Honda's customer service center in California today and all told me the same thing, without a key code I am SOL. They said they have no way to cut a key off the VIN and that they could not look up a key code off the VIN so I had to pull the cylinder and take it to a locksmith  I'm really starting to get irate over this deal, I think it's pretty crappy customer service of Honda not to do this for us, afterall, I can get a key cut for my truck by just the VIN, and Ford sells a lot more trucks than Honda sells bikes so it can't be that much trouble to keep up with Key codes. :( I guess tonight I'll go up and try to remove the top clamp and go about it that way, unless someone has a better idea.

Thanks,
George

I just had another thought, how hard is it to remove the wires of the back of the switch? The thing is not locked, so I should be able to start the bike and drive it on my trailer to haul the whole thing to the locksmith by just hotwiring it shouldn't I?

I dunno, just thinking outloud, getting frustrated.

Whats the cost of the left pocket door?? I think I would break the door to get
to the lock... Easier than pulling the ignition lock... Anyone know what the
replacement cost of the locking pocket door is??

Paul, wasn't really blaming Honda, and yes I should have made a copy before my key was lost. I just thought it was dumb for them not to be able to get a key code, still don't understand why. As to getting a key for a newer Ford or such, I have seen people order keys for a new vehicle by reading the VIN through the windshield, justhave to show ID to get them, but they can cut them off the VIN. I guess that's all beside the point right now.

As to breaking things, or calling for them to go out to the shopwhere my bike is, that is not going to be an option. I am out of work and drawing work-comp which means I have plenty of time and no money so I'll just do it the hard, but cheaper way I guess.

As to how easy it is to hotwire, you'd be suprised, possibly scared if you only knew, I havn't done it to this bike, but I have hotwired plenty of vehicles, always legal like, was an automotive electrician for years and sometimes that was the way things had to be done.

well, maybe

OK, I just checked and the lid for the left pocket is $11.95 plus shipping so maybe I might just try to take a hole saw and cut a couple big holes in the lid so I can get to the lock for it. I do want to know if anyone knows for sure if a key made from it would fit the ignition or not. I do know that sometimes the ignition takes more tumblers or such than accesory locks do, but that is on cars, not sure about bikes.

Thanks,
George

Whew

Well, I just went up to the shop with dremel in hand to cut the lid open on my left compartment to get the lock out of it to take to the smith, but when I got there I found my keys hanging from the switch. My boss had found where he left them today, and got really busy with customers and so forgot to call me (did I mention yet how scatterbrained he is?) so....I fired her up, and rode her home. The only thing odd was I have never tried to full throttle off idle, and I did it a couple times while the bike was warming up and it would just lfood and not rev any higher. It went away when the engine warmed, just never nmoticed that before.

Thanks for all the help and usggestion, thankfully it was all academic as the keys showed up just in the nick of time. :D

George,
The key blanks for the 1300 are:

ILCO X265 HD109 Ignition

and if you hve the Hondaline Top Box, that one is:

ILCO X132 Hondaline Top Box
For the second key, you might have to go to a
local "mom and pop" locksmith. Most of the
larger chain stores do NOT carry that one..
It's also a key for the older Volkswagens...

OK, OK a service manual is on my list, next time I have money to buy stuff. As to getting a copy made, I don't need to now I have my keys back ;) Just kidding, I am going to be there when Wyoming locksmiths open in the morning and have a few made for both. The top box is GIVI, but it looks like an old VW key, so maybe it is the same blank as the honda top boxes. I told my boss when I called him on his cell after finding the keys that he got real lucky, if they had been found after I took a dremel to my bike and cut it up that it would have cost him a lot more. He told me he found it on his desk under some stuff while he was on the pohone trying to track down a place to come out and make me keys, he is a swell boss he was going to take responsibity and have them made for me and pay for it all.

All in all he is the bst boss I've ever had, if I could just get him to take some GB (memory pills, I don't know how to spell ginko) :D

Ahh, all is good, stress is back down, still can't wait to go back to work.

I haven't read the entire thread, but...just remove the left side fairing(plastic). The lockable glove compartment is a part of that side of the plastic. Then carefully take that to the locksmith and tell him not to scratch it. ;)

Should be able to remove it in less than 30 min. Thats if you haven't removed it before. I can provide instructions for removal if you need them.

Scott

Scott, My boss found where he had lost my keys so it is no longer needed. BTW< I am curious though at how you would remove the left pocket lid without a key to unlock it and without tearing it up? I didn't try and it's all academic now, just wondering though.

George

Knew I forgot something. :eek::
Screws under lid.

I don't know anything about making keys, just thought if you could get the lock to him he could do it. Would you need access to the back side of the lock cylinder to make a copy?

Anyway: Stupid Scott for forgetting about two screw under pocket door.: :
