Rear view mirrors

Yes by all means, I never change lanes with out doing this even with the blind spot mirrors.
I want the OP to understand this should be part of your routine but he had a motorcycle before so I assumed he already did this.
I meant a shift of the head/shoulders to one side allows looking directly behind the bike using a mirror, not a rotation of the head to check six before a lane change. "A mirror can only say no, it can never say yes."

Otherwise I have no need to see 10 feet directly behind the bike except maybe to check out someone at a traffic light. To the OP's thought, If someone is coming up fast behind me they'll be in the mirrors long before half a car length.

When I travel with my trombone on the pillion, it blocks the vast majority of my view through the regular mirrors of everything behind me or in the side lanes. I added RAM Ball Brake/Clutch Reservoir Base mounts with 6" RAM Ball extensions and Powerstands Racing Dualsport Mirrors by PSR. There is some vibration to deal with when at faster speeds, but I can see what's back there! :) And yes, I always turn my head to look to confirm what I am or am not seeing in the mirrors!

Here are some closeups I cropped from some photos. The other RAM extension on the left side is for my GoPro with the double RAM Ball mount. If interested, I can go put them on and take some better photos.

I wonder if someone put flat glass into your housings after they broke the original “objects in mirror are closer than they appear” glass. One of the wrecks I have has flat glass mirrors and they are terrible when you’re used to the factory glass.

Post #38 shows he solved his problem by removing some poorly placed blindspot mirrors!!!

Problem solved. The previous owner had added spot mirrors, which I thought were factory. They were actually blocking the view that I needed.
Good you got it sorted. I've never felt the need to add mirrors and the ST's are the best I've ever used. One I did once replace one of the mirrors on an older bike with a shorter thicker stalk mirror. The idea was that the two mirror would vibrated more or less at different frequencies so that at any rpm one had a clearer image than two factory mirrors. There was some improvement.

So with the mirrors that you added, do they give you a better rear view when you are not loaded with gear? Or do you prefer the stock mirrors in that case?

I only use them when I have the wide load of my trombone case across the pillion. Without it blocking my view, I feel I can see very well with the stock mirrors, even when I have the top box on and my camping dry bag on the pillion. If I were to use them regularly, even when not loaded down, I am sure the view would be better, but it would be somewhat redundant for most of the view. I only mentioned this setup to add to the discussion for those that feel the stock mirrors aren't adequate for them.
