Ran bike with low engine oil!!

My ST1100 is very, very sensitive to the slightest incline from level ground when checking the oil level..... and if you run it, it takes way longer than a few minutes to settle out again....

Best to check cold before turning the engine over at all, on a spirit level checked surface........ or, do an oil change and put 3.6 litres in.. yes it should be 3.7 with a filter change, but I did that and suffered a weird vibration that only subsided when I took a few hundred ml's out..... go figure....

Mine works best when just above the low level line, no more than half way between the two lines is fine..... but if the bike is tilted at all..... it will vary...

Apart from that, great bike!

This is a great site Brendan, even if you just listen to other site members opions and advice, and what I really like is there is no foul language,
The road from Rathmullen to Portsalon is something else..What part of Donegal are you.I,v spent many a holiday there.I,ll be up that way again soon.

So maybe what happened was when the previous owner was busy filling the bike up with Irish Quarts, he was filling himself up too. So after half of the third Irish :pint, he was full and thought the bike was full too! :doh1:

From south Donegal Pat,near Killybegs, great twisty road from here to Glen, have you been to Sliabh League,if your up this way give me a shout and we can meet up,lota bike charity runs up here, have you heard of Sandras run for Crumlin hospital, haven't done one yet, just back on a bike since October

If it wasnt for drink we'd rule the world lol, it would take alot more than 3 pints to fill the average Irish man

Another thing you could do to ease your mind is send .25/litre of oil out for an oil analysis test.
Just get it tested for metals. That would tell you more than you need to know. Test usually is $20 USD
Good call on changing out that oil soon. Oil is a cheap maintenance item that you can do.

I,v been to Sliabh League in the jeep a few years back when the kids were young. we used to stay in a little B&B in Donegal town called "The Fishermans Catch",think its closed now.I used to drink in the Abbey Hotel when Dom Breslin owned it.I was through Donegal town last weekend on my way up.I came through Enniskillen,Ballyshannon, through Barnsmore Gap,Ballybofey and on to Letterkenny.I did nearly 400 miles last weekend and have nearly 3000 done since Christmas.
I do a few local charity runs from time to time but tend just to hit off on my own or with a friend of mine who has a 05 goldwing trike.Have you ever heard of www.irishphotorally.com.We,re doing that at the moment,I,v 12 of the points done.
Next time I,m heading your way I,ll give you a shout.
My no is 087 6386968 sent me a text and I,ll sent you my email and I,ll send you a few photos of the trike.

I was in Bundoran exhibiting at the Chief Ambulance officers conference a number of years back.... a nice wee place, I stayed a the hotel with the golf course around it......

I have always wanted to go back but never yet managed!

Bundoran is ok,it wouldn't be the typical Donegal town, feels like a different county to me,from donegal town to glen and up along the west and north coast is very scenic, then you have glenveigh national park and the poison glen, lovely county and not over run with tourists, I must go to Scotland with the bike and tour the highlands etc,
have you ever changed the fuel filter on your pan and how often should it be done?
