Poor-man’s HUD

Just to be clear, these only use GPS for heading, velocity and distance, but not navigation?

And, I'm guessing they are not rain proof?

Correct on both counts. He mentioned that designed for in the car, it probably wasn't waterproof. I'd try a Glad bag to see if it still worked but this is more at the novelty stage for me so water/weatherproofing is a non issue for me.

Heading isn't really important to me either but if an upgrade had a huge ring of compass LED indices and any one turned red indicating your relative heading (with or without a degree readout) I'd be all over that! :D

It does come with a 5x4” reflection film, but I don’t like it. It’s fine for me as is.

It does have 3 brightness modes: auto bright, day, night. I use auto now, as bright at night was almost distracting

Good catch on the USB VOLTS. Think it runs on 9-33v or some such. Doesn’t use a lot of current, one could make/buy an usb voltage step up converter. Fortunately the USB port I use has both 12v and 2usb ports. (Posted on yesterday’s What did u do,with your ST thread).

And speaking of waterproof...
Not a big concern for me in So Cal, but what do people do in rain if they are using USB ports?

got PYLE HUD from amazon.
cost a little more ,but I got it before I left foe ArkanSTOC.
will set up in morning before I leave.
very good on screen(smoked/tint probably helps)
How did it work out?

Decided to give the reflective film a shot for a while. Its now 2x brighter now that the light isnt refracted away, and no more ghosts. May have to enable the auto brightness mode so its not blinding at night. Will road try it later

Wow great Idea. However I would not want one that had too much information or clutter. Just speed and maybe real time would be enough. I see from your links that there may be one (or two) that would do that.... A little black electrical tape could mask off the clutter.....

like this one -- simple (plus I might be able to see it when I drive into the sun which is my daily commute........

Regarding “too much clutter”...

I guess so if youre not used to scanning multiple data displays. As you can see from the bike “office” or cockpit picture above, Im using data from:
- an iPhone
- Garmin GPS
- ST1300 Dashboard
- GPS driven HUD
- Kenwood 2-way radio (actually two)

Plus multitasking:
- talking to my team
- hearding kittens on the road (vehicles under my charge)
- watching for those onside cars/trucks
- watching traffic signals/signs
- scanning for road hazards
- praying

But you’re correct in that really only the speed and maybe occasionally calling out a cardinal heading and time is really necessary

Is the skeleton a kitten that ventured too far from the herd?

didn't have time to look at it.
Trip to ArkanSTOC was limp.limp.limp.
bike needed jump start.took Jump Starter with tire Inflator/Air compressor,Thingy with me.
then fuses started,No brake/horn.fuse
Dash/tail lights.fuse
stoped at parts store bought a bunch of fuses.
cant find problem.Sometimes fuse blows right away, sometimes they last 100 miles?
I have it in van, still not really looked at it.

I haven't had much chance to play with the HUD other than to see it powers up but I'll mask the stuff I don't use— some legends icons and the Satellite Number display to start. The digital speed readout can be tasked to voltage but with the required drilling down the menu I won't be using that much. So Time and Speed and maybe Distance or Driving Time. 'Real Time' can be displayed in International Time format which I like though telling day from night usually isn't a problem. LOL.

Some of the more interesting units at Amazon require the OBDII port and that was a little disappointing. But this will be useful and it was a good price.

Road tested it today...
Other than dim in sunny California lighting, yet still readable with sunglasses on, im totally used to this already. No more looking down. Super easy to set up and two velcro strips was all it takes to hold it.

you need more lights.... just saying...

Yup...
Eventually I may add some on the sides of the radio hood behind the seat for more side visibility
This Christmas, think I’ll bring her indoors and hang some bling on her and place the gifts by her wheels

Sounds like an intermittent short to GNDmaybe from a chaffed wire. Somewhere along the road vibration puts 12V+ against the frame or other GND point? Or against a GND wire in a harness? Or a bad connector? Chasing down intermittent electrical problems can be a real challenge.

I'll look into the second link.
my bike has a 06 wiring harness.(might be the problem,,,I installed it)
thanks Joe

Multimeter or connection light probe time.

- Measure with power off, power side to ground for each device not working, to look for Low impedance (short to ground) with multimeter in low Ohms mode

- Measure with power on, for 12v power where it should be and where it shouldnt be on problematic devices leads and sockets.

Look also where cables are worn and get strained around Corners or squeezed or rubbed. Or poor connections, especially where not well soldered, or just bolted down to metal where they can get loose or rusted.

That second article Mellow referenced looks spot on with similar symptoms

Yes i do a lot of praying too while splitting lanes during my commute. I seldom look at my dash because my eyes are fixed on the traffic around me. I really have no idea how fast we are going but since I am busy syncing with what is around me, that could be a problem. Open freeway traffic likes to run at 10 to 15 over. Not sure since my speedo is off by about 7 mph. so a cheep GPS speedo would really help. I do not use a GPS since I have a map in my head and my cell phone is in my pocket but it is linked to my 20s in my helmet playing bluegrass or chamber music. My eyes are for the road or the scenery when all is clear....

A little off topic, but its all good...
W/R/T lane splitting, i picked up a bad bad habit of lane splitting at higher speeds. I started doing this follow the leader thing (um competing with i guess) with a LAPD motor going home on the 60 Fwy.

Since then, ive thought about this and decided to not lane split any faster than I can reasonably stop if in a bad splitting position, like under 30 mph. And pass only 5-10 mph difference.

Regarding prayer...
They say “theres no atheists in a foxhole”. I would think this applies to riding motorcycles as well.

I think we are on topic. Splitting lanes is where you can not look down at your instruments and where the HUD is the most useful.

The tighter the squeeze or the faster the speed the slower I split. The 2 to 20 mph delta is all that I ever do.
