OK, I saw someone thinking about using a pelican case as a topbox and it got me thinking.

I do have a Honda Topbox, but I don't always want to use it and there are sometimes I want to carry items that need a little protection.

I used to travel with cameras all the time and happen to have a few Pelican Cases sitting around.

I figure that this one would be perfect for regular use.

I remembered that Turbo Tom sells a rack that attaches to the Honda Topbox plate so I called him to see if he could help me out.

He sent me an unfinished bottom plate that attaches to the Honda Plate.

In the next few weeks I will be working up a template for this to make a removable Pelican Case adaptor for the Honda Topbox Plate.

Plate is backwards here.

Hopefully you get the idea from that.

After I work up the template I'll send in back over to Turbo Tom and if there is enough interest I am sure he can make it a product.

While figuring out the mount for the Honda Plate I'll explore how to make it work (be detachable) for people with the stock rear plate.

What does everyone think?

Yo Rob,
Great Idea!! I have always wanted to use Pelican boxes as they are bullet proof for motorcycle use. How do you plan to make it removable??? The other thing is the lock. What kind of lock can you use? I know a padlock will work but a key lock on the P box would be cool. This company sells P boxes for adventure riders and it comes with a internal lock.. http://www.cariboucases.com/store/?name=Catalog&mode=i&item=000012

The plate is locked in place with a bolt onto the Honda Topbox plate, so already removable for that setup.

As far as a lock, I will probably use a padlock.

Technically, when I get done, you could buy that box from Caribou and use his key setup.

1/4 steel plate?

aluminum not available?

1/8 aluminum could have 4 flgs bent 90 around the edge for rigidity.

just my 2c's

hmmmm:rolleyes:....reinvent the wheel....I'll get back to you on that

Yea, because the Honda Top box is waterproof and has foam inserts available, right? LOL

Geez, I thought I would share, maybe I'll just keep it to myself.

I think you'd probably want to remove or cover the plastic mounting plate bolt covers, or they might get lost.

Ciao,

Ciao,

Not sure I follow. I ride mostly without a topbox, so this would not be much different.

Of course, I am one of the folks that recommend that you glue (hot glue) or use silicone to hold the covers of Honda topbox in place....

Nice to see someone else working with some of the same ideas that have been bounding around in my head. :popcorn

I have a small pelican that I use for short trips and around town. It is held on with two strips of industrial strength Velcro (You really need to grunt to pull it off.) I like the box so well that I am very interested in how the rack adapter and larger Pelican box works out.

Waiting with baited breath,

Mr C.

It's just a design point. A more comprehensive design would duplicate the Factory set-up and obviate the need to glue the covers in place. Of course, cost is also a consideration, so it may not be feasible to do this. However, given that some people have posted messages about losing those covers--and, IIRC, that they are not sold separately by Honda--I thought now would be the best time to mention it, since you're still working on the prototype. HTH.

Ciao,

Yea, I guess I didn't explain what I am doing.

I am taking a part that already exists and giving it another use.

I didn't make the plate, it is a part of the rack that is sold to attach to the Honda Topbox Plate.

If you think that rack needs redesigned, you should bring that up with Turbo Tom. ;)

Nice.

What does the term waiting with baited breath mean?
In: Word and Phrase Origins

[Edit]
[Edit]

It's "waiting with BATED breath". To bate is to reduce, lessen or diminish. Waiting with bated breath implies waiting with such suspense that one is hardly breathing.

Sorry I don't spell so good..:(

Just messing you. :D I saw a similar response on an old episode of Mork & Mindy.
