I have an 04 st1300 and it has a small backrest and the stock passenger hand holds but I am looking for possibly a rear bag that incorporates a better back rest and wrap around arm rests for the wife. Any suggestions?

Passenger comfort

Most of the popular top boxes haze a back rest pad option but I doubt that you will find one that has wraparound armrests.
The Hondaline box has “armrests†but they are arms rests in name only because they are too small and too far back to be of any use.
The backrest works well accordingly my partner.

Re: Passenger comfort

Be prepared for serious sticker shock.
The fellow I bought my bike from paid $500 for the Hondaline box. Without armrests.

We have the Givi topcase/no rests for the ST. Better-half likes the case over other options

On the GoldWing, she requested removal of rests ($$$ Kuryakyn!) because "they're annoying"

My pillion rider feels exactly the same as yours.:)

Re: Passenger comfort

Be glad you're not shopping for an R1200RT top case. BMW wants $1500, just for the case!

I just paid $600 for a topcase off ebay. :eek:4:

It is like new, the only reason I was willing to pay that much!

It all depends what having one is worth to you! They do come in the different colors to match the bikes.

Expect to pay, if you want a nice one, unless you luck out and find one that someone just wants to dump it...but don't expect it anytime soon.

Hi everyone.
I'm Trempest, located in Singapore and just joined the community of ST owners and hope to learn more through this forum.
I purchased a 1999 ST1100X in March 2018 after 12 previous owners and just completed the overhaul, new paintwork and installed some accessories.
I've gotten a base plate and armrests fabricated for the bike and would like to share some pictures.
The bike didn't come with top case or base plate so utilizing the 2 protruding pieces (rack?) of the bike I had a local shop handle the fabrication.
All costs are in Singapore Dollars (SGD)
Top case from from Chinese online shopping site - $360
Pillion topcase padding - $28
2mm stainless steel Baseplate/bracket from local fabricator - $450
Adjustable armrests from Chinese online shopping site- $150
Taillight from local online shopping site- $25
Total investment - SGD$1013 or roughly USD740
The armrests pivot at the bolted-on ends closest to the elbows and its this area that bears the weight of the pillion when I'm doing corners so its pretty sturdy.
The knobs beneath each armrest allows the pivoting angle to be adjusted. I tend to adjust them pointing a little upwards, in a way forcing the pillion to exert downward pressure at the elbows instead of at the forward ends of the armrests.
Its been tested and my pillions all comment about how much more comfortable the rides are.
I'm just 155 pounds and my pillions weight about the same. I would have opted for thicker steel for the bracket/base plate if we were of larger build.
Hope this helps anyone who's still considering retrofitting armrests onto their ST1100s.
Cheers!IMG_20181011_125500.jpgIMG_20181011_125510.jpg

Nice job! I suspect that having the parts fabricated in the USA would be more expensive, unless someone has a friend who has access to metal working machinery. I would be worried about the top case supporting the cantilevered load if the pillion put her/his weight on the end of the arm rest. Perhaps a case that is rugged like a Pelican Case would take the stress?

That's quit the setup!

I have a set of the Hondaline Topbox Armrests, and they are A JOKE! They came with the topbox, because I wouldn't have bought them.

If you are able to do a little fabricating, you can get an idea or 2 at Big Bike Things. Parts are mostly cruiser parts but good to get you thinking. You'll need some kind of sissy bar. Goggle the 1100 Honda back rest. I'm sure some thing similar for the 1300 is out there.

Great work! Always good to see an older bike brought back from the dead.

Thanks.
I was actually browsing at a local scrapyard and found the bike waiting to be 'put to sleep'. It just looked like it had so much potential so I bought it at a steal. I felt really sorry for it
By the way, in Singapore the lifetime of privately owned vehicles is usually 10 years. After that it either gets scrapped, exported or it has its Certificate of Entitlement (COE) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Entitlement) renewed for the next 10 years. However, recently there's been a new ruling that effectively bans all older motorcycles officially registered before July 1st 2003 from use from 2028. Its sad cos there are lots of enthusiast, collectors, die-hard fans of older bullet proof bikes. More info here if anyone wishes to find out more (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/new...eved-by-nea-ban-on-older-motorcycles-10123136)
Rarely would anyone renew the COE due to the often high costs involved in the renewal and maintenance of 10 yr old vehicles.
In my opinion, its pure crap to force people into giving up their interests and belongings.

Yes I did consider the load-bearing requirements. The area subjected to the load coming from the pillion's elbows are quite close to the 'Y" bars where the base plate is fitted; its about 8cm. Also, I included angle bars beneath the base plate to counter the downward load to minimize flexing of the base plate. The fabricator doesn't specialize in bike stuff and initially insisted that the angle bars weren't necessary. The deciding factor was "it would not look as nice". Gosh! I thought. I immediately insisted. LOL.
So far so good and it'll be interesting to see how long the setup would hold.
If there are any signs of weakening I'll definitely look into reinforcing or changing the design. After all, my primary intention for retrofitting armrests is to bring my 80 yrs old Dad on rides while he's still healthy and able-bodied.

You think that's expensive? I'm needing a replacement LH pannier (don't ask!), quote from Honda motorcycle dealer in Melbourne is AU$2,500., at current exchange rate, that around US$1,775.

Honda Australia don't supply a complete unit, this is for the individual parts (approx. 32 - I think they told me - someone on here may know), plus assembly. We are use to getting ripped-off for motorcycle and car parts here in AUS, but even this surprised me.

I'm currently trying to convince the Minister for Finance that buying a 2nd hand ST1300, wouldn't be such a bad idea - so long as it has a good LH pannier.

Anyone got any words of wisdom that I could use?

How did you do it? Oh yeh, you said not to ask!
You could tell her you won't :wine2:until the full cost is back in the bank. Obviously at this stage you will be lying.
Good luck sorting it.

Nice work! But for that kind of money even SGD you could probably design and fabricate some kind of carrier in decorative cloth based on something from a medical supply company.

Foldable compact a couple of these could carried in a pocket until needed. Patent and market it. Maybe call it a—

I'll be here all week. Try the veal and tip your waitress.
