New ST1100 owner. Where do I start??

Lithium batteries are usually quite good and last a long time- if you’re going to use a battery tender when the bike is parked, just be sure the one you use is lithium battery specific -on all my bikes, I have an SAE plug to the battery so a tender can be plugged in when the bike is not in use- they’re ~ $40 and Deltran is the Battery Tender brand, but there are others.
 
What I find amazing about the ST1100 is the reliability. Yes, they are all 20-30+yrs old now. That means you must, must, must get caught up on any deferred maintenance. However, once the systems have been gone through and brought up to spec, they are unbelievably reliable. They just work. To me its the ultimate commuter/daily machine, particularly at the current buy-in prices.
 
Ha …. Thats what i’m talking about. I hit my 40’s and suddenly simplicity and practicality are what its all about. Everything about this bike and this forum checks all my boxes. Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice.

Just took her out for a short cruise through these Western North Carolina Twisties and played with the idle and rear shock. No kidding …. that is the simplest idle adjustment mechanism ever. Brough it down to just over 1000.

Thankfully the rear shock seems to be dampening well enough, even in its softest setting. Maybe I got lucky and the PO replaced it already. It does look like the stock blue spring though.

I also Isolated a 2200 rpm rattle that sounds like a loose heat shield to a cracked section of the right side heat shield and ordered one off ebay for all of $17!

And I noticed that i’ve got a lithium battery. Know nothing about them. Any experience with lithium batteries out there?
Was going to tell you I've got 88K plus miles on mine with the original shocks so don't worry they won't suddenly go bad. The secret is not going over railroad tracks at 70 plus miles an hour and no 300 plus pound passengers:biggrin:
 
well, I just received one of those WindRider seat covers and was super dissapointed by it. I had high hopes but it doesn't fit, the retaining strap seams are separating, and even with it not fully wrapped around the seat, it is so tight that it splays the front wings of the seat. Additionally, the rear strap falls right over the protrusions that need to slide down into the frame for the seat to seat.

I have a call in to them to see what the deal is, but i would think twice about buying one of these.

Forget about doing grand maintenance and overhauls on your new machine. All these bikes require is new coolant every 4 years oil changes every year rear end fluid every 4 years spark plugs every 25 k and air filters every 25K and thats it. Owned mine for 24 years and this is this is the most maintenance free machine i've owned.
This is good to hear. The suggestions, all good I'm sure, sound like a litany of woe for a bike that has perhaps the best long term dependability.

Could not agree more... one "easy to maintain" bike. You can always do extra and change all fluids all the time, but in my 31 years of experience with my 93, about the only thing that "popped out of nowhere" were a few master cylinder rebuilds which, BTW, can be done in about 20 minutes and $20. :)
 
I have had two Silverwings 81&82 , my only complaint was I wanted 4 cylinders, well in 1990 honda made it and called it a ST1100 , finally got the perfect bike for me.

I was a long time Suzuki GSX1100G owner and enthusiast until the bike was stolen in Los Angles. Took a few years off of riding finally picked up a Kawasaki VN750 over this last winter that fell in my lap. I tried so hard to love the vulcan but just didn't get that feeling I was used to that I loved so much. (Its for sale now, in case anyone is interested). A couple weeks ago I asked a friend who owns a Honda Powersports dealership what 1100 cc range bikes he things are the absolute best bang for the buck. He walked straight over and showed me one of his personal bikes, the ST1100. That sent me down a rabbit hole and I finally realized I needed one. I picked one up almost immediately on craigslist and quite honestly am blown away. I absolutely love this bike.

Since this amazing community exists and I am new to this machine, I wanted to ask the advice of you fine people on the main things a new St1100 owner should know, what inspections/fixes I should do right away, and what I should keep an eye out for as I log my first miles.

Bike info and initial observations/questions. Would love anyone's thoughts on any of these points:
-It is a 2000 St1100 with 58,000 miles in wineberry. (non abs)
-Starts right up every time. Idles at 1250 ( first mark over 1000). This is higher than I am used to. Normal?
-Temp gauge sits at 1/4-1/3 once warm while driving steady at speed. Creeps up to 1/2 when in city traffic or when idling at lights, then drops back down when I get going. This is also more variable than I am used to. Normal? Coolant was at the low mark when I got it. It was blue, so I added the blue Honda coolant up to the top mark of the overflow tank. No loss so far in about 75 miles of driving, but damned if I can't really see the coolant level without taking off the side panel.
-Suspensions feels great (I'm 220 lbs and the PO told me he maxed out the tension on the rear shock). Only thing that felt weird was hitting a small bump while in a 90 degree turn and the front end felt like it hit a wall and bottomed out on me when there really is no way it could have. Was this some anti dive functionality? Is that normal behavior?
-Stock seat is in place. A few tiny tears starting. Any advice on stopping the tears or seat recovering? Best products or materials?
-Seat comfort is good, but I sometimes feel like I'm sliding too far forward. Has anyone had luck reshaping the foam to guide their ars back into the pocket instead of forward?
-both my side panels (the painted ones with the gray plastic vents) seem to be warped, as if from extreme heat. The plastic is slightly wavy and misshapen at the front of them to the point that the left side doesn't quite match up with the other fairing panel in front of it. I also noticed the bubbling on the left side gray lower cover, as if from extreme heat coming off those left side pipes. The bike runs great, so I'm not too worried, but I it is slightly concerning that a PO may have ran it hot for too long. Also why so hot on only one side??
-Brake fluids in the brakes and clutch look clean and topped off. Clutch engages in the first 1/2" of lever travel and brakes feel great.
-I have one MAJOR ergonomic issue that I haven't found a clear solution for. The rear brake pedal is too high at rest for me. It is a strain to keep my foot on it without depressing the brake. Have people had luck adjusting the brake pedal's resting height? What methods have you used?
-Windscreen seems to be a few inches higher than stock and doesn't quite site perfectly in its mounting spot, so I'm assuming it is an aftermarket situation. Seems to block wind well, but I do feel some head wobble at highway speeds. It does not have the two vents that the stock screen seems to. Do people install vents often? Or what sort of solutions have folks found to minimize the head wobble at speed? I have never had a bike with a fairing before so this is new to me.

As far as Mods go, if you were me and you had $500 to put into improvements, what would you spend it on?

Having read your list, new to an ST1100. I just covered my seat with neoprene from JoAnn Fabric. It has a two way stretch, pull it over the seat edge and staple.

Thanks! I believe i was on the front brake. Assuming the cambelt and timing belt are the same thing? I don’t think it has been replaced yet. PO didnt mention it. I suppose a timing belt and valve adjustment is probably in order. Hope I can handle those myself without too much trouble.
There is a long conversation about a timing belt interval, age versus mileage. The engine is interference, so if the belt were to break...I ordered the Gates alternative, mentioned on this forum, I got it then for about 38.00, so it could be 46 to $50, then you'll have a new belt.

UV exposure has changed the nice contrast of black to a nice contrast of silver. It still works as a seat cover however another material that holds it's color with the massive amount of sun exposure it will get, might be a better choice.

I've recovered mine with a marine grade vinyl fabric from the local fabric store. The key to getting it right is patience. When you first staple it on it will look a bit wonky, but as you progress keep removing staples, pull tight again, and re-staple. A few rounds of that and it will look like the original seat again.
