New Garmin Zumo XT

It comes with a motorcycle mount and power cord. Appears to be an AMPS pattern. Garmin even lists a handlebar mount for an additional $60.

It does look pretty good. Might get me to upgrade from a 660lm. It really doesn't seem to do anything better than my Zumo but the bigger and brighter screen would be really nice. Will wait for some real world reviews.

The website says map updates are included. I wonder for how long and how frequent? It does not say "Lifetime Maps"

I love how it is built for motorcycles yet they what to charge you extra for the motorcycle mount instead of including it.

I am curious..... Has anyone mounted speakers on their ST? I can see what looks like a space for them
Very few. The vast majority mount a comm system on their helmet... Sena, Cardo, or one of the cheap Chinese versions on Amazon.

The new product provides connectivity with their InReach product for a plus and leaves behind Garmin TPMS compatibility as a negative.

I did not think of TPMS. I'd very much like to have that if I replaced my trusty Zumo.

That's not quite right. They include a motorcycle mount. Similar to what is included with the previous Zumos. They offer a stand alone handlebar mount similar to the RAM line. All this info is found on their product page.

Included.

It says on the Garmin site that the following is included in the bx:

  • zūmo XT
  • Motorcycle mount and hardware
  • Motorcycle power cable
  • USB cable
  • Documentation

I believe it comes with the Ram type mount with the u-bolt clamp etc. In the installation guide in the manual it shows this mount without any notes indicating it is optional. On the page that shows the Automotive mount there is a highlighted note that says the automobile mount is an option that can be purchased.

I've been trying to do a little research as well, the initial marketing is a bit misleading IMHO... but my conclusion so far is, if you have a 590 series already, you'd need some incentive to "upgrade". So I will say the 1280x720 resolution and a different screen technology than the 590 series "transflective" 800x480 is a nice jump..... but I loved the 550 screen brightness although it needed a resolution upgrade.... I have a 396 now and like it fine. I won't be an early adopter and will keep looking for user reviews. Some stuff I will never use most likely. Wonder if it still has the interface for a VIRB camera, I see TPMS is gone, wasn't sure about MP3 since the specs don't mention it.
GPS City price $499 vs. $585 for the 595LM.

HAHA! I guess I missed it...

Motorcycle Features
GLOVE-FRIENDLY TOUCHSCREEN
CONTROL MUSIC AND MEDIA FROM SMARTPHONE
OR MP3 PLAYER

Good, glad to see that there. :thumb:

One of these days I need to thin out my 4,000 songs to the ones I like...:think1:
I'm not all too excited yet because...... does that mean you have to have a separate MP3 player that streams like your phone does? Somebody needs to get one into their hands and give us a real review.

I would think it's an internal mp3 player.

I dunno.... it might be nice for long rides on the slab...
For me, long rides on the slab require sufficient hearing protection and enough speed to render bike speakers useless unless they are loud enough to be a total disturbance of the peace. I'll leave that to the American Brand bikers with kilowatt amps and side-firing sub-woofers in their saddlebags to impress/annoy all those around them. Even in-helmet speakers have to overpower the ear protection and end up being devoid of high frequencies. I find that custom fitted in-ear speakers provide protective sound attenuation and allow me to listen to music at volume levels that are not hazardous to my remaining hearing. Plus I annoy nobody.

Looks like a new connection mount for this GPS. The name is interesting as Navigator is used by the BMW branded Navigator series of GPS's.

As @beemerphile says the main advantages appear to be integration with Garmin's InReach satellite services which potentially means you can leave your SPOT at home. Also provides Bird's Eye Imagery at no extra charge which could be useful for off-road adventure riders.

The Garmin 590/595 glitches have been mentioned a couple times. What are they?

The best way to answer that question is to direct you to another thread that details all the quirks. Post one includes downloadable PDF articles that explain the idiosyncrasies of both the 590 and the 595 and how to deal with them.
Don't let the title dissuade you if you are not a Basecamp user. There is a lot of useful tips in the articles.

I just talked to someone on the Africa Twin forum that already received his new Zumo XT. It does come complete with the Ram mount and base.
For those of us with multiple motorcycles, even if it includes a (one) mount, that still means re-outfitting the fleet.

I like the fact that the screen is touted as being 'extra bright', however I am skeptical. I was told verbally by a Garmin tech rep that the Zumo's were better than Nuvi's in bright sunlight, but they both wash out on a sunny day. When I see how one of these performs on a bike I'll become a believer, but not before.

The transflective screen of the 590 series uses ambient light as some of the backlighting, so while clear, it still needs a sunshade. The new extra bright is a much better resolution and if it's even a little brighter than the 550 or 390 series, I'll just say it's about time. I'll just say I'm sorry for all the 660 users, those were just terrible IMHO.
As for the mp3 player, Garmin doesn't list it in the specs I found, and GPS City's listing of the specs doesn't list it either... so... hmmmm.... maybe.
Routing algorithms changed when Garmin brought out Basecamp and firmware upgrades... even the 550's were affected with some of these so called "glitches". The curvy road feature... we didn't need that to complicate things, it didn't work that well. I wouldn't expect the XT to be any different, it's just Garmin's mindset... whatever happened to keeping it simple, LOL. Wish they'd consult the motorcycling community like they alledgedly did when they introduced the 550.
Users will tell us what the real story is eventually. I'm not in a hurry to "upgrade".
The connection to the Explore app does not work unless you actually have an InReach device (have to enter your serial number). And those aren't cheap either.
