Helmets Need expert advice on the Shoei RF1000

I tried other helmets. Head shape is important, and the rf fits me just right. Ventilation is ok, but during the cool months it fogs easely. To cure this problem, I got a "pin lock" visor and no more fogging. Visor change is easy with the Shoei system. The only thing missing would be a built in sun shade, but you can always apply tape to do that.

It's a very good value when you can get the RF1000 on sale

I'm sure there are better helmets, but it has to feel right. Some new helmets have thermo forming foams inside the shell which adapt and keep the shape of your head. It's worth the look.

I wear the RF-1000 lid and love it. I think it's a great value within it's class of helmet. I solved the fogging problem with PinLock shield inserts as well. Yes, it is noisy with the vents open, but so far my experience has been that any lid with good ventilation (which the RF has) will be noisy. Have ridden through severe downpours with the vents closed and did not experience any leaks. And I will agree it is light enough to wear on long rides.

Can't say enough good things about the PinLock system... you buy the shield and insert and click them in. Done. Let's Ride!

Same here... the pinlock solved all the fogging issues I had.
The RF1000 is a great lid and my wife and I love them especially in the Axis Yellow colours.

Whether you decide on an RF1000 or something else if at all possible try to get fitted by someone who is a knowledgable helmet fitter. Just so happens I had a mini helmet seminar yesterday at the Int. Motorcycle Show in Ft. Worth. I have a Shoei X-Tec that I have been wearing for about 6 years now and quite honestly I have felt like I needed to replace. It is the only helmet I have owned since I started riding again 6 years ago. One of the reasons I went to the show was to look at the currrent helmet offerings. At the Arai display just so happens there was a factory rep. I told him I was in the market for a helmet and that I had heard Arai had some models available that would fit a Shoei head so I wanted to see if that was true and if so if there might be an Arai model I would be interested in. It was not the case 5 years ago that Arai had something that would fit a Shoei profile, or at least that is what I recall. He asked me what helmet I currently owned and what size it was. I told him it was the Shoei X-Tec in an XL. The first thing he did was measure my head and determined that I should probably wear a Large and not an XL and that what I have been wearing may be too big. Then he had me try on a couple of different Arai models that he felt was suitable for me in both a Large and an XL. Long story short, he was right. The correct size for me when the helmet is properly fitted is a Large. He explained several symptoms a rider can experience with a helmet that is too large and I had to concur that he was right on because I have been experiencing several of the things he spoke of with my X-Tec. I guess one of the biggies in my circumstance was how a helmet that is too big can contribute to wind noise. To test his fitment advice after I got through at the Arai display I went to the Shoei display to try on helmets. The results were the same, I should actually be wearing a Large even in a Shoei.

Now keep in mind that when I bought my X-Tec 6 years ago all I did was go to a local shop and try on helmets until I found one that felt OK to me and then ordered one. And that is what my original intentions were yesterday, just try on helmets since a bunch of them would all be in one place and see if I could find something suitable. Im really glad I ran into the Arai rep. His advice was very informative and helpful and probably applicable in most instances no matter what brand of helmet you buy.
