After reading several posts about hand numbness and after-market grips, I decided to purchase a set of the black Kuryakyn ISO grips. Amazon seems to sell them for less than most suppliers. It was hard to find the correct size, though. Kuryakyn's website suggested part #6340, but they were much too large for my 2004 ST. I sent them back and ordered part #6341, which were much better.

Installing them was pretty easy. Removing the stock grips was a breeze. Just use a sharp utility knife and be careful not to cut into the throttle sleeve too deeply. The right/throttle-side grip went on with just the right amount of resistance. After removing the stock grip, I simply put a dab or two of dish soap on the end of the bar and began to push on the new grip. It went on just fine. (Incidentally, the Kuryakyns are longer than most grips and due to their metal housing, it will take some precise cutting if you want to retain the use of your bar ends. I read that the Kuryakyns absorb a lot of the engine vibration--even without bar ends, so I put them to the side, for now.) The left grip, however, was a little too loose, so I applied electrical tape to the bar, as per the instructions. I had to wrap the bar several times before the grip went on with more resistance. But the resistance wasn't enough, so I reached for the glue that came with the Kuryakyns but both tubes were dried up. I used super glue instead and it seemed to work, for now. A hot day with my bike sitting out in the sun may prove otherwise.

I immediately went for a 30-mile ride and was impressed with the amount of absorption they had. I usually encounter slight hand numbness after 15-20 minutes of riding at highway speeds. The grips don't eliminate my problem but they seem to help quite a bit.

I had been shopping for Kuryakyn ISO Grips but wasn't 100% sure which part number to buy until Kevin's post. I've been riding with stock grips and Grip Buddies. The Grip Buddies are good but the Kuryakyn ISO Grips are even thicker so I believe they'll help alleviate hand cramps on longer rides.

I've now installed the #6341 ISO Grips on my '06.

I used a long #2 phillips screwdriver and some 409 cleaner to carefully pry off the OEM grips in case something went wrong with the Kuryakyns and I needed to re-install them.

Like Kevin I had to build up the left side too but not by very much; maybe 2 or 3 wraps of electrical tape. I cut the provided PVC spacer off to about 40% and dropped it into the left grip. After a few test installs I picked the rotation angle I liked and made an index mark with masking tape. Once the glue was on both the grip and bar, it took just a few seconds to install. I removed 2 of the end-cap screws to make sure trapped air could escape easily as it slid on. I was pushing a fair amount of glue towards the left switch housing, so I paused momentarily about an inch short to quickly wipe off the excess. The glue Kuryakyn provided was "super glue" (cyanoacrylate) and both tubes were in fine shape in my kit.

The throttle side install was more difficult on my bike. I used sandpaper on both sides but spent a lot more time on the throttle tube to remove all the old glue residue. It was still impossible to test-fit the Kuryakyn on the throttle tube without lube. The rubber inserts would begin to roll under themselves as I got about 50% of the way on. First I tried just water to help make the rubber glide better but that didn't help. I decided against glue and used the 409 as lube for the "final" install. I coated the inside of the grip and then sprayed a little on the tube continuously as it slowly slid on . There would be no chance to rotate the grip after installation so I had to carefully watch the rotation angle to make sure it was where I wanted at the end.

-Start to finish in under an hour; including clean up.

...I also added the Kuryakyn #6339 end-weights.

100 miles in and I love 'em so far!

Good job guys. I hsd the chrome ISO grips on my V Star and loved them. One question, is the bar the same size on a 2001 ST 1100 as your ST 1300?

Sorry Whamm, never had an 1100 and don't know... The Kuryakyn website was ambiguous and like the OP I likely would have ordered the 6340 but for his thread here. If all else fails order from a re-seller that offers returns!

As much as I love my bike it gives me much pain to ride it! I don't understand why Honda put such hard grips on it. I mean mine are like thin rubber around the bars! This weekend I put some bubble wrap with black tape around the grips. It does help alot. But I still think to be comfortable I'm going to need some bar risers. My first two fingers on my throttle hand go numb! I bought this bike because I really enjoy being out on the road as much as I can, but its gonna take some fixin' to get there.

Anyways just wanted to get that off my chest.

You're not the only one who gets numb hands/fingers while riding. I've ridden various bikes for 25 years and have always experienced hand numbness after ~45 minutes of riding. Different grips, different gloves, different bikes... same problem, though.

That may be true but my bike before this one was a 1986 VF700 Magna I never once got numbness on that bike, and the grips were stock. Rode from Omaha to Mount Rushmore twice, even did my Iron Butt on that bike w/o numbness. It might be the bar angle/height too, IDK yet.

Theres alot to research here so I'll figure it out.

After loosening the adhesive, I use compressed air to remove or install grips, and they'll slide right off or on. For glue you can use RTV gasket maker. Don't need much, just a thin line or two along the length of the grip. Don't use too much if you think you might remove them in future. It gives you time to work, will take over an hour to initial cure, but overnight is better.

I had the iso grips on my 05 st. And loved them. On my 07 I wanted heated grips and found show chrome heated comfort grip. This gave the feel of the large vibration reducing grip and heat as well.

Those show chrome grips are a great idea. I wonder if I can find them in black?

I loved my Kur iso grips on my Magna's. I had thought about them for the ST but wasn't sure how they would look. I like them better in black. So I just got the electric grip heaters in and have been shopping for new grips for the install. I was wondering how the Kur grips would work with a heat strip underneath?

I had the iso grips on a sportster I had and they were very comfortable. Heating the bars would never work with them because the rubber pads are hollow creating a massive air space under each one. No grip heater will be able to over come that.
For those not wanting heat, they are available in black instead if chrome but, they cost more, go figure!
I went with the BMW grips with symantec heaters and have been happy with them

Another thing to consider here guys is that everyone rides differently and every body type is different.

I think a lot of the discomfort stems from having too tight of a grip on the bars in the first place.

I have these grips in hand and I am about to install them as well without the weights.

I installed the Kuryakyn grips on my 03 this last summer and love them. I had no problem with instillation and they look better on the bike , i think.

My wife got me a set of the Show Chrome heated grips but with the closed ends. Did you reattach the end weights? Where did you end up putting the controller?
