Colorado just passed a filtering law, but with restrictions..... I have used it a few times but with great care. So far no angry drivers yet. But I have seen a few young crazy bike riders splitting lanes on I-225 at excessive speeds when traffic is heavy. Those types are going to ruin it for all us as the Colorado Legislators are going to review this law again in Aug. with input from CDOT and the Colorado Highway Patrol, who are not in favor of it to start with.
Colorado recently passed a new law allowing motorcycles to pass between vehicles stopped on the roadway and traveling the same direction as the rider. The law is effective Aug. 7, 2024 and has these conditions:
- The motorcycle passes on the left of the vehicle in front of them.
- The other vehicles are stopped and traveling the same direction as the rider, such as in traffic or at a red light.
- The lane is wide enough to pass safely.
- The motorcycle, when passing, does not exceed 15 miles per hour.
- When the stopped vehicles begin to move, the motorcyclist shall cease passing.
A motorcycle rider may
not overtake or pass:
- On the right shoulder.
- By crossing over the center line into oncoming traffic.
Lane filtering is not the same as lane splitting. Lane filtering allows motorcyclists to safely navigate through stopped traffic. Lane splitting, which remains illegal, involves riding between lanes of moving vehicles.
