Is the classic sport-touring motorcycle doomed to extinction?

Well, the reply was to the supposition from an 1100 rider that a Wing was excessively big for filtering or lane splitting as compared to other sport tourers. That wasn't from you :)
Probably referring to the 'old' style Wings not the new 'skinnier' version ... ;)
I wonder how wide they are. :think1:

I dunno, with the nationwide increase in road rage and proliferation of gun violence in this country, I'd tend to be afraid to do it even if it were legal lol

When the traffic stopped for two miles - you filter legal or not :)
Not necessarily.
I mean, sure, some will... even the cagers sometimes do that in the breakdown lane, to get off at the next exit. Meaning, a rider executing an illegal pass on the shoulder has to be ready for the sudden appearance of a car pulling out in front of him in the breakdown lane. .
Despite the risks, and we ALL take risks, I wish for national lane splitting as well. Even if it were legal everywhere, doesn't mean you HAVE to do it.
Yes, road rage is more frequent, but that is a matter for law enforcement, and just one more hazard to using our roadways.

Since I got my iPhone, before I get on bike or in car to go somewhere, I check for traffic. Has saved me a lot of time and kept me away from sitting in a traffic jam.

Yes. Shoulder riding is more dangerous than filtering

Colorado just passed a filtering law, but with restrictions..... I have used it a few times but with great care. So far no angry drivers yet. But I have seen a few young crazy bike riders splitting lanes on I-225 at excessive speeds when traffic is heavy. Those types are going to ruin it for all us as the Colorado Legislators are going to review this law again in Aug. with input from CDOT and the Colorado Highway Patrol, who are not in favor of it to start with.

Colorado recently passed a new law allowing motorcycles to pass between vehicles stopped on the roadway and traveling the same direction as the rider. The law is effective Aug. 7, 2024 and has these conditions:

  • The motorcycle passes on the left of the vehicle in front of them.
  • The other vehicles are stopped and traveling the same direction as the rider, such as in traffic or at a red light.
  • The lane is wide enough to pass safely.
  • The motorcycle, when passing, does not exceed 15 miles per hour.
  • When the stopped vehicles begin to move, the motorcyclist shall cease passing.
A motorcycle rider may not overtake or pass:

  • On the right shoulder.
  • By crossing over the center line into oncoming traffic.
Lane filtering is not the same as lane splitting. Lane filtering allows motorcyclists to safely navigate through stopped traffic. Lane splitting, which remains illegal, involves riding between lanes of moving vehicles.

yea few are going to abide by those restrictions I'm afraid

as we all know motorcyclists think that laws (excessive speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, passing on double yellow etc) are for cagers and not motorcyclists
