Into The Unknown

Its 28 degrees and the bike cover was covered with little icycles. I had loaned my bike pump to a big boned lady coming back from new Hampshire and discovered the little penis part is broken. Maybe she had “ man issues”! Lost my third cooler somewhere in yesterdays snow storm. Found out i was out of propane this morning and had to walk for coffee.
I dont do “dry runs” or test tours. I just get on and go. This cold morning and these things wrong are sooo typical of my first days. 200 mi s of here, its 20 deg warmer. You know where im going! Cant wait to fill up and see my mpg from yesterday. I was pretty soft on the throttle.

I suspect they put cocaine in my coffee this morning. Left at 7:45, 28 deg. I missed a turn and my gps took me into the ny hills. Man, was it cold! Second time ever my feet got cold. 200 mi south of here its 20 deg warmer. Pretty sure i broke my coldest twmp ride, which was 27 deg.
Presently thawing out along int 88, waiting to feel my feet again.
Got 40 mpg yesterday and found gas this morning at $4.05

So, i wrapped myself in every blanket here and fell asleep before the sun set. I was out cold! Woke up at 6:00, and its 25 deg out. Geez!

Not sure why but temps in the high 20's-40F seem much worse for me on rides than below 28F down to mid teens. If ice is likely, I don't take a bike. Don't think it's a dangerous perception problem caused by the cold temps, I've never experienced frostbite or frozen anything obvious off.
Anyone else experience similar 'comfort gaps'?

Probably because the warmer air holds more moisture, which makes it feel colder than the colder drier air does. The same effect that humidity has in hot weather, but in reverse.

Montreal is in the ST. Lawrence valley. The moisture settles in here and the dampness cuts right through you in the winter. It's funny when people from dry cold climates visit here in the winter and they can't figure out why they feel so cold when they are used to much colder temperatures where they come from.

All the way from Boston to penn for this? Just doesnt make sense! Bailed for the day. Those driving n told me this was gonna b a proper storm. By coincidence, im staying at the scottish in for my third time. Never planned each trip. So, this is supposed to pass overnight and hopefully, there will b some warm air behind it. It is a big system. Hopefully you can hunker down and rest up for a warmer tomorrow. Rain beats snow but wet sucks too. Meant to ask what tires did you put on this trip?
I know i have the 31’s on the front but i cant remember the rear. Its a battleax for a beemer. Uncle phil can tell you what it is. Sorry i cant remember. They track better than any combination ive had so far, even on graded road and cornering. As a matter of fact, i didnt know i was on graded highway until that really good song ended! The rear feels a bit harder than the 31, and when i tapped the rear brake on a wet road, it locked a bit. It seems every combination needs a little getting used to, so, with what i have, i’d give them four avacados, and expect that to go up as i get used to the tires, and get a little more scuff on them. I got ten thou out of my rear 31 last tour and was told this rear will go longer.
Even with that said, im still going to try the avons next tour. Not because i dislike the present combo, but because guys here that tour use them too and id loke to feel the diff.
I can look at the rear tomorrow or you can ask uncle phil. Very very pleased up till now.

Yea, weather looks a ton better tomorrow. Im heading to shady valley camp tomorrow and expect to spend the 20th there. I think that will be a success. The last three days truly sucked.

Thank you uncle phil! And, also for your advice!
Good tire. Beefy sidewalls and lots of tread depth. They will go way beyond 10,000 miles. I found that they gripped a little less as they wore down and locked a few times, but stayed straight. I know everyone has a tire and oil opinion. But I just want you to know my experience and to give you a heads up on your long tour.
