Hello my fellow ST-Owners. I am new to the forum and this is my First post and I am also a new rider. I am just here to ask if anyone can answer some of my questions in regards to the Honda fuel cut-off relay. I have a 1996 St1100 with about 80k miles. When I bought the fuel pump cut off relay was missing so I installed a toggle switch to turn the fuel pump on and off. Now the questions I have is:
  1. will bypassing the fuel cut off relay hurt the fuel delivery of the bike or is it just a safety feature?
  2. will running the fuel pump through a toggle switch and a fuse overload the fuel pump?
  3. is the fuel pressure regulated within the fuel pump or dose the fuel cut-off relay control the fuel pressure?
  4. where could I find a brand new fuel cut off relay if needed?
Any information will help. I am very mechanical inclined and know a lot about the St1100 already. Thank you for any support. Can’t wait to ride this season just got my permit and registered the bike yesterday. It’s a super custom street fighter ST1100. love the bike so much already.

4.) Partzilla or any other Honda OEM part vendor. PN 36100-MN5-000 $53.44 from Parzilla.

Welcome Joe and congratulations on your ST1100.

Jim answered your questions well. I wonder why the relay was removed but suppose we’ll never know...

Enjoy your new ride. You might want to lower your expectations about having a “super custom street fighter”...

Could this be the youngest member on ST-O?!
I'll be 64 next month; does that place me among the oldest?

Hello Joseph, and welcome to the forum!

I think that the fuel cutoff device on the 1100 is a safety feature only, I don't think that removing it has any effect on the performance of the bike.

You can get a replacement part from Honda, or parts resellers such as Partzilla. I have also read post in the past describing how owners have rebuilt the device, although I am not familiar with how that is done.

You are welcome, Joeseph.

Be advised, with the relay installed, when you turn on the ignition ( but before starting the engine ), the fuel pump will energize for about 3 seconds and then turn off. The relay will turn back on the fuel pump after the engine starts. Maybe the PO didn't know this and that's why he pulled the relay and installed the toggle switch? Do you have the original relay by chance ? If so, install it and see if works as I described.

Thanks John, I have learned a good amount about the st from reading your replays too people, I'm very grateful, and as far as the custome streetfigter, the ST has actual come out amazing as a streetfigter, it's looks beautiful and handles even better with less weight. Some of the mods I did to it to give you an idea, digital speedo, tire pressure monitoring system, custom fairings and side covers, clip on handlebars, bar end mirror, custom front and rear fender, custom solo seat, front fork turn signals, dual dominator headlight, shortened Frame, slightly larger front tire, leather side bag with battery inside, shorty dual slip on exhaust( sounds amazing) And many more. I will post photos as soon as I get it out the basement this week. Thanks again guys. If I have more questions I will not be Afraid to ask you guys have saves me so much time and money already.

yes I did know that the fuel pump relay primes the pump befor starting which can be done by the switch as well, I just flip it on for a few seconds then turn it off until I start the bike. and I don’t have the relay and I am the one that installed the toggle switch because the relay was missing when I bought the bike.
