So with the cooler weather coming back to us, and in need of a new leather jacket, I was in research and shopping mode for the last couple weeks. I ended up with a Firstgear Scout IV jacket. It's is Firstgear's "flagship" leather jacket. It normally retails for $450 - $500 but is on clearance at newenough right now for $219. Here's my impressions.

The Firstgear Scout IV jacket is a fantastic jacket. This is the most versatile leather jacket I've ever owned, and I've owned many leather jackets including Alpinestars, Vanson, Fieldsheer, Joe Rocket, etc.

The ample venting in the front and back of the torso works very well. The two-way zippers on the wrists that allow fresh in to your arms are a terrific idea and work great!

The pocket layout and storage compartments are well thought out, very easy to use, and will hold a considerable amount of stuff.

The full liner and neck warmer work really well. I've worn this jacket from 40 degrees to 80 degrees and was comfortable in both ranges of the thermometer. Over 85 degrees and I would likely turn to a mesh jacket. Under 40 degrees and I am likely to take the car, so this jacket will get a LOT of use by me. And it is very thick leather, great stitching, really well built, so I have no doubt it will have a long life span.

I'm very pleased with this jacket. It is highly functional and looks great. It is also very comfortable which means I'll wear it often. Highly recommend this jacket, especially for the great $219 newenough clearance price! (it retails for $450 - $500)

I have a Scout III that I bought in 1998 and rode in for nine years. It's an excellent product, and $219 is a bargain.

Well, you guys just cost me another $239 (big guy size and shipping.) Textile is probably more practical, but a leather jacket is, well, leather. Don't forget to click the box to send a buck of product credit to ST-O when you check out. By the way, unlike a lot of closeouts, they had a bunch of sizes (even XXXLT and XXXXLT) when I ordered.

A slight cautionary note:
The sizing on these (at least the one I got) doesn't seem consistent with other FirstGear jackets. A 4X Kilimanjaro was a little loose on me, but the 4X Tall Scout I received wouldn't even close with the liner inserted (seemed closer to a 2X or tight 3X.) My 2X Mesh Tex is a little tight, and the 3X Transition II fits OK. I don't know if the other sizes for the Scout run true; it may just affect the big or tall jackets. (Maybe the guys in China just don't believe that there are actually people my size.) I'll be calling NewEnough Tuesday to arrange for a return. I can't fault NewEnough's service - the jacket arrived two days after I ordered it, and the price was good.

This is a fantastic jacket, at a fantastic price. I bought mine in '04, and I think I paid around $400. It's incredibly warm, and still has plenty of vents. Great protection and good armour. If someone is looking for a good leather jacket, here ya go.
