So I decide I need to flush my brake and clutch fluids in my ST11 and I head up to the parts store to get some brake fluid. Long story short, after visiting two stores all I can find is the hybrid Valvoline Synthetic Dot 3 & 4 brake fluid, the stuff that is supposed to work in either system and not the straight up Prestone Dot 4 synthetic that I have always used. Before I searched any further I wanted to find out if anybody was using this stuff and if the conventional Dot 4 fluid has gone away. Is it OK to use the Dot 3/4 in a system that all it has ever had in it is Dot 4? The label sez you can it add to it existing fluid but I just want to get a confirmation from someone who knows more about this stuff than me that it is OK to use in the brake and clutch systems in our bikes.

I don't know any more than you! But, I've been using the Valvoline 3 & 4 in my Honda CR-V and ST1300 since 2006 and 2007 respectively, with no apparent issues. WalMarts here (central Oklahoma) often have Prestone 4.

The only real difference between DOT 3 and DOT 4 is the boiling point, which is higher in DOT 4. You can safely add anything labeled for both to a system that's had DOT 3 or DOT 4 in it.

Thanks to all for the info. I will proceed accordingly with the Valvoline synthetic Dot 3/4
