Custom pipes fitted on my ST13

Mother Honda has done a good job, by accident I am sure, that no mods give the normal HP increases compared to other engines. The Dynojet Power Commander not working was a good tip off. Many have speculated on intake track, exhaust header sizing, etc, etc, etc. What has become evident is the bike is OBD1 and compensates for the minor mods that are made by replacing the stock exhaust, air filter and fuel pressure regulator. I increased the pressure on the fuel pressure regulator to 61 PSI, added the K&N along with the Ducati exhaust. The data is available already, just look at the dyno runs that have already been done.

Hey BrekfaST :hat1: !

Cans look unbelievably great. I did have to laugh however, for a second there I thought I ws looking @ the two brothers on my ST1100  ! Then I saw the differences! Much nicer and I'm sure much much more pleasant that my noisy:mad: cans! Wish I had a set of OEM cans for my faSteST black ST!!! (I like em quiet! LEO can't hear me either!!!)

:shrug2: I been looking for dyno runs with these bikes and mine is the only one I can find, you know where there's more?

I agree - Staintunes too expensive
Two Brothers too loud and expensive

I fitted cans from a Ducati 998
$60 Ebay including shipping
$60+ supplies
Lots of TIG welding and polishing
Cored out with conventional muffler packing
Quieter than Two Brothers
MUCH cooler than stock
Always wanted a Ducati...

So this might be a dumb question, but are those stock 998 cans or aftermarket?

The Ducati cans were stock. After fitting to the bike, I removed the stock multi plate baffles and replaced with rolled perforated steel that was then packed with muffler packing. Some of the anodizing had to be removed to weld aluminum brackets to the cans in place of the straps. I then removed all of the anodizing from the aluminum and buffed them out.

Muffler manufactures have posted dyno runs. You maybe get 1-2 horse on mufflers. Mixed results on the filters from loosing to gaining a few horse. As much as I would like a few more ponies, HP is hard to add (or subtract) from the ST.

The stock cans were sewing machine quiet with the whine driving me crazy.
I really like the sound of the new mufflers. I had read about decreased heat with after market pipes, but WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

The ID of my baffle is 1 1/4". A Two brothers is 2 1/4" if my memory is correct. Guess which is louder...
I have not had a chance to compare to Staintunes yet.

This was one of my winter projects. It took lots of hours, but not many $$$'s. Having a TIG welder was a must for this job.

Here are pics of the stock baffles being disected and then rolled perf.installed

wow!......................:coffee1: good luck

WOW... I like the Duc cans...:bow1:

Are you guys doing your own welding, or are you having a shop do it? If you took 'em to a shop, was is a generic shop or a exhaust specific place?
Was it as easy as taking the stock cans to the shop and having them match the brackets?

I have to agree, "why so much for aftermarket cans?".
Aftermarket exhaust companies have been making systems for years, and now that most bikes come out of the box with most of the power they'll ever make, the only reason to buy aftermarket on a street bike is sound and looks ( of course, if your on a mission for performance you'll be after lightening your bike, but you'll be buying lots of other stuff too...).

Also, making more power on the ST is very difficult. Lightening the ST, or replacing the engine internals would be the way to make "real" changes ($$$).
HINT - a quick way to lighten the ST - eat well, and get plenty of exercise :D.

EDIT: THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITH OUT SOUND!!!!! :)

Thanks,

Tom de - on his way to ebay... :)

Tom,

I don't know how to weld and don't have welding equipment either - would be nice to learn it though.

I went to a muffler shop that could do mandrel bending and welding stainless steel. I'd suggest to find a muffler shop that does work for on trucks as big trucks (tracktor trailers) often have stainless steel exhausts - at least the cans are so the shop has experience in working with stainless steel. The mid pipe of the st is a bit les than 2 inches 1.9 something so to make the pipe fit the shop will have to either enlarge the diameter of a smaller pipe or reduce it on a 2 inches one. Some bending will be required as well.

It should not be very complicated for someone who knows what they are doing. The hangers from the VTR pipes can be reused, they need to be repositioned for a correct fit, the shop should be able to take care of it.

I'd suggest to give them access to your bike whe they are fitting them, I had to take them back once since the first time around they did not have the bike and the new pipes were not symmetrical when I put them on.

VTR cans will not require opening up the cans. Try them stock and if you'd like more sound just use the bafflectomy procedure detailed on the superhawk forum, I also added that link in this thread earlier. I did it, then I found it a little too loud so had the shop make a removable baffle for the pipes - also a very simple job - and now they sound just perfect. Deep booming v4 sound but not loud just right - to mee at least :)

If you go with the VTR cans go to the superhawk forum and post there that you are looking for a pair of stock cans, most of those guys have aftermarket pipes on their bikes and are happy to get rid of the unused stock ones lieing in their garages.

good luck

Henrik
