Hi , I couldn't work out which sub forum to place this so hope this one is okay.

I am in the process of completely stripping down one of my ST1100AY's , I can now see that the original colour (color) was a Red but the panels have subsequently been resprayed metallic blue.

Not liking the blue I have decided to get the panels professionally resprayed and this then leads to some questions which I would appreciate any thoughts on

(1) Do I stick with Honda ST Paint codes and pick something from the entire range or go custom (non Honda)

(2) What is the best colour(color) from the entire Honda ST range (very subjective I know but it would be good to hear members preferences).

(3) If I go completely custom (using paint shop colour charts) then I want it to look like it has a custom paint job, does anyone have any examples they really like or suggestions

(4) Is there somewhere I can see the entire range of genuine Honda decals from all the global models so I can pick the ones that best match

(5) One of the smaller panels has a split in it, should I just get a second hand replacement or is this something that can be easily fixed during surface preparation

(6) I vaguely recall something about paint for plastic having to be flexible , I assume the Honda genuine paint is "flexible" but is there a term I should use if I go for custom paint (e.g. plasticised)

There is no hurry on this, I will probably aim to get it done late February '15

Many thanks Steve (Asterysk)

I think the answer to number 1 can only come from you. I think when you find the color that really hits you, you'll know. For me number 2 would be (US) 2008 Candy Glory Red, (UK) 2014? Denim Blue. See here. If I were to do a custom paint I would go with a Bright Arctic White.

If you read a lot of the posts elsewhere here, you will discoverer that some colors are faster, no doubt some probably get better mileage, another color will handle the twisties better, and yet another accelerates better.

Seriously, the choice is up to you and only you can make the pick. My favorite is a candy apple red - but my first bike's tank (Triumph) was that color and it just melts my heart. It is a personal choice. I would stay away from a white or light color because you (well, I would be) will always be chasing the dirt.

Your body shop guy will have some strong opinions about that split. I would want to completely stabilize it on the back using some permanent material, if possible. MCN wrote up a plastic repair material, I don't remember the name of it, but you can probably get it from their website. For me, were I to spend the kind of money required to paint the bike and tank, I would get a used body panel rather than repair one with a split. He will also be able to advise you on the flexibility of the paint. There are enough plastic cars out there that this should not be a problem.

If you go to an auto paint shop, they will have endless books with color chips for every car and bike ever made. The choices are truly endless. I don't envy you making the pick - I would have to limit myself to say, colors from Honda, or from another bike manufacturer. Browsing all those colors makes my head spin.

Good luck. Post a pic here showing your finished bike!

UK) 2014? Denim Blue. See here.

wow, thats really nice . If anyone comes across the paint code for UK 2014 Denim Blue please let me know. Meanwhile I will try my Honda dealer here in Dubai but not holding out much luck

So, this took an unexpected twist. Apparently it is impossible to get Motorcycle paint in Dubai. The dealers won't supply it and the spray shops don't have the mix calculations for Motorbikes.

I am now looking through car paint charts, however, this does mean i will be able to get it matched in the future if i need additional parts painting.

Also discovered that changing the colour of a vehicle is a major Major hassle involving the police and many discussions, even more complicated because o have one document that says blue and another that says black

Solution had presented itself, just need a car colour that is dark blue almost black

The real problem with a custom paint-job starts once one needs to replace a fairing part or pannier-lid... like after a tip-over or getting bumped by a car...
With a bike in OEM colour you simply order what you need, open the delivered box, bolt the item onto the bike and go ride...
With custom colours one still needs to order the cracked/broken/shattered item, but then needs to remove all badges/decals, sand it down, haul it to the body-shop again, who again needs to produce the mixture, which is adding costs and, when observed in daylight, likely differs from the rest of the bike as the recipe is now coming off a different batch of ingredients, while the sun has done its thing to the rest of the bike...

Its also mandatory that the shop uses plastic compatible paints and primers... you're gonna be pissed big time if paint & lacquer start to crack, peel or suffer orange-skin...

And considering the sun intensity down there, I'd stay away from any reds...

Asterysk, you mentioned decal kits and differences offered.
The decal colors DO NOT reflect back their original colors when on different colors paint! That is by 'design' from mother Honda.

In other words, in the caes of my 92'ST, the decal kit for that year reflects back gold wings, etc. when on that particular red color.

in the case of my bike's tupperware, when I had all 17pieces professionally re-done in pearl white with a hint of red pearl when sunlight hits the angles, the color between the 'wings' decal on tank is almost a pink and the 'wings' themself reflect back a silver.

Just saying, whatever year sticker kit you choose will NOT reflect back same colors when on different paint color than was used for that particular year model.........been there- done that, and all panels clear-coated AFTER sticker kit was correctly located......reason being, Mother Honda does NOT take returns or exchanges due to your mis-calculations, nor take back or exchange mirrors when they are packaged incorrectly as lefts or rights..."packaging is contracted out and not our problem" ......DAHIK.

I'm partial to plaid. The Williams Clan tartan is a nice choice. :)

Thank you for the words of wisdom from I guess bitter experience !

So if I understand this correctly, once I select my custom colour , I should then look at the ST1100 colours over the years to find the most similar manufacturers colour then order the decal kit for that year and that colour ? Thx Steve

Well, yours is a 2000 ABS-II model (golden rims), the issue with decals: 2 Honda wings on false tank, one HONDA lettering above tail-light, the trimmings on the upper front cowl and the pannier lids, cause they are corresponding to the metallic blue (*Type 24* B162M) or the strawberry red (*Type 23* R151CU) this model was available with (please check the OEM colour codes for other years)
The two Pan-European badges on each side are black plastic with golden, bold-relief lettering, thus uniform for all colours/years from '96 on (on pre '95 models also those were decals, specifically matched to the base colour of the bike)
Found a site in German, listing years, distribution areas, thus full fiche and colour codes:
http://www.bike-parts-honda.de/piec...T1100Y-2000-F__4400-PAN+EUROPEAN+ST+1100.html

If your want to surf through all avail OEM colours throughout all years of the ST1100:
http://www.bike-parts-honda.de/identification.html#
Move cursor over [PANEURO] (upper left field), then see [1100] & [1300] pop up, move cursor over [1100] to get a popup with all years from '90 to '02, once you click on the year you'll get all countries the SC26/ST1100 was sold to in that period (no fiche on US models, Canada is included though), want to get a colour code, just select something like front fender and read it aside the parts description.
The fiche for the decals is near the bottom section, named [MARKE] (translation of "markings" in the Honda catalogue)

A reasonable priced source for ST parts is David Silver http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/
Dunno about their shipment policy to Dubai though... considering recent events...

Martin nailed a very important point- nonstandard color replacement parts. The cost of having one part painted to a custom color may not be included in insurance without a rider on the policy and is a PITA unless one is really invested in the color. I did a recolor of mine from black to Honda white because the black shows imperfections/scratches too readily, IME. I also wanted to be more visible and white does that well. It also is better than most colors with regards not showing dirt, IMO.

One thing about white is that people really pick out a high-viz rider on a white bike....it's almost a paranoid in which people seem subconsciously to be more threatened by police than the hurtling truck which might not stop at the sign. I did find that white is much slower because of drivers' reaction. With other colors, coming up behind another vehicle on a winding road would often motivate the driver into a strange dance of rear view mirror, speedometer, rear view mirror, speedometer, road, mirror, speed, mirror. Many people would begin to drive as though they were drunk, crossing the shoulder line, over the lane lines. Very strange but so noticeable because same bike, same rider gear just changed black to white. :)

The paint, prime, coating is a big deal these days as is preparation and paint which will stay on the plastic without cracking. That adds substantially to the cost over a metal vehicle in many cases. Please keep us posted.

I always liked the colour of the First 1300 I bought. It was painted A Honda colour. It was a choice off a Honda Civic a few years ago.

If you really want bling check out http://www.houseofkolor.com/hok/Shimrin2/Shimrin2series.jsp . House of Kolors has all the candies, pearls, the paint you see on show cars. Pricey but looks great. What I would do is walk into a new car dealer and find a color you like, there are many new car colors that look real good in the sun. The best part is that the color will always be available, in case of a touchup, and with a factory paint code it can be done anywhere with minimal matching problems. I like the new mustang med red metallic or bmws Melbourne Red Metallic. watch out red pant is the most expensive
