Chairs: Pico vs Kermit vs Flex-Lite vs Packseat

Good write-up...I've been trying to decide on a chair to purchase for moto-camping, your review is very helpful.

I think if you did not already have any chair the Flex-Lite would be a nice option. Light, easy to pack,
easy to setup and comfortable. If you have a Kermit then you probably love it and won't like the
Flex-Lite.

You know me so well! Thanks for the great write-up. I didn't even know about the Flex-lite, it would probably be the best option for dual-sport packing, but my Kermie is still too comfortable if I've got the space.

If your like me, two are ruled out because they won't support your....ummm fat butt.

I like the design of the Flex-Lite but the only concern for me is the plastic things all the poles connect to.. I could approach the max weight and I see them as the week link in a good design.. Any thoughts on this?

Well, they are very sturdy. Not like the cheaper camp chairs at walmart that use screws. Big Agnes sells one that looks to be identical to the Flex-Lite called the Helinox Chair One rated at 320 lds.

Keep in mind that REI stuff is guaranteed for life if it ever breaks; that's a big plus in my book. Plus, I'd probably wrap the ends of the tubes to minimize tearing up the canvas pockets.

Mellow,
Thanks for the review. I've been sitting on a $6.95 chair from Walgreens and it has held up so far.
However, since I saw my first Kermit, at Moonshine, I've been in love with it. Both for looks and quality.
The problem is the cost. I also like the Pico, but that too is costly and heavy. So, I'm going to bring all my saws back up to the garage (the cave) and build my own.
I've built some chairs in the past, but just for regular camping. This might be a bigger challange. Well see how it goes. I want try and have a chair with all the right qualities...and has arms. Gotta have arms on a camping chair to support your beverage of choice.

When I was at REI looking at the Flexlite chair I raised some concerns about how strong it was. The sales person sat in the display chair and bounced and twisted it around in all directions and really stressed it in every way. It came through undamaged. He told me he has done this several times for customers with this same chair.
