Brake pedal foot positioning

the front brake isn't the evil ugly step sister everyone makes it out to be.
I don't see where anybody is saying that. I think everybody here knows the front brake solo has a lot of utility when applied appropriately. But if used carelessly I will say that it can be an evil ugly stepsister.

Says 38k miles in 2020 is that possible OR is that over 18 years (comes out to 2.1k miles per year.)?

How is she holding up in that island surrounded by ocean air?
Re the mileage, I edited the 2019 mileage for an end of year update, just as Mellow updated the site & produced the 2019 end of year report. I think 38k in 2019 put me 3rd overall for distance, and I posted in the thread but Mellow is already a busy guy, so I didn't bother PMing him about it. I'll re-edit that when I remember.

Total miles on the clock now is just shy of 60k, so she'll be getting a service soon (maybe this weekend if I can be bothered, parts arrived yesterday).

Re how she's holding up - I bought it knowing it was a year round commuting machine in a wet salty environment. She had a couple of panels missing & light oxidation on the forks etc already. The oxidation has spread a little, but it's nothing a little wirewool & fine sandpaper wouldn't fix. Rear shock has some oxidation too, but she just flew through an MOT about 4weeks ago without them saying anything about it. Discs are old, warped and about to be replaced but don't show signs of salt damage (ridden daily, I wouldn't expect them to either).

I think most of our environment differences though are that I see more rain (helps to wash the sea/rock salt off...) and ambient temp here is lower (5C on my way home this evening). I tend to do minimal cleaning over the winter, have done with all bikes, the road grime theoretically helps to stop oxidisation (that, or I'm plain lazy...).

I also doubt I'm in danger of the sun causing bobbling to anything - even in summer. At the moment, all my riding is before the sun surfaces, or after it sets. It'll be probably another month until I ride in sunlight.

With my flame hat on, I have recently been considering jet washing her....
I don't see where anybody is saying that.
Nor did I claim anyone here says it. Though I'm sure you, like everyone else here, has repeatedly been told throughout riding about the virtues of the back brake and the dangers of the front one.

Have you been able to try the pedal adjustment yet ? I put mine down quite a bit, as you can tell from the earlier adjustment photos. You can see from my avatar, how my left foot naturally sits - pointing down a tad. It isn't comfortable in these boots with my long legs to have my foot further back on the footpegs. I have to remember to lift it up on the tighter corners.

Not yet. But I will. Haven’t touched the bike much in the past few weeks.

I was thinking of this too, cause I scraped my toe a couple of times at intersection turns:
”I have to remember to lift it up on the tighter corners.

The “official” diagnosis is that this is a type of “sprain”. My name for it is “crankle”, short for cranky ankle. Well it’s more of a heel and acheles tendon thingy.

Just what the doctor ordered!
About 1/2” or 5* lower makes a huge difference in foot/ankle on footpeg to brake pedal angle. Now i can pretty much keep my foot at a neutral position over the rear brake pedal (not arching upwards) while riding. What a relief on the stress on my heel and acheles tendon.

@jfheath
again, thank you for the pictures showing that this could be done

and thanks for the feedback with the after and before shots
This ^ That really illustrates what a difference a small change can make. I don't get any pain with my lever in the original position but then I don't spend an extended time in stop and go city traffic constantly working the gearshift of brake.

Now you will need to find something else to alert you that it is time to to take a break.
That's why we have stomachs and why there is pie. :p

Maybe you should check your math. Your first post on the board said your bike had 42K on it when you bought it (in 2018) and you just said it now has (nearly) 60k. 60-42 does not equal 38K. Care to try again? You might not be 3rd overall for distance but could be first for exaggeration!

But it does look nice for 2020 miles you have ridden in less than 23 days!

You seem to care a lot more than I do about all of this.

When editing the form on the site in late December 2019, I put the mileage I thought I'd done, given the mileage I thought I remembered buying the bike at. I've not done the numbers or checked the paperwork, but I believe in December 2019, I thought the bike had around 25k on it in December 2018, when I purchased it. 60-38 isn't 25 either, but this is from a vague recollection of an event several weeks ago... You'll have to forgive my memory.

At the same time as I edited it, Mellow posted the numbers & changed the form to 2020 mileage. I've not been back to edit it, but I pinky promise I will, at some point.

Now, I do know that my commute is approx 38miles each way, and I commute Monday-Friday, and haven't had a day this year that I haven't worked. I haven't bothered tracking my mileage for fun rides, but I'll let you do the math if you care so much.

Oh, and as I happen to be standing at the bike at the moment, current mileage is 60694, trip counter (that I never reset) is 836.6, efficiency is 9.4miles/litre and it's 4:53pm. It's 7C according to the temp gauge.... Since you seem to appreciate accuracy.

I wonder, why is this worth you calling it out? I think my "official" listing by Mellow was a few months of riding figures, not the whole year, and I didn't care enough to have him correct it... I simply made an anecdotal comment from my (admittedly faulty) memory in this thread...

I thought it important to ask you questions on behalf of me and the other 157 forum members on the list below your claimed 3rd place accomplishment. No prizes are won or lost, at the least it should be reported honestly.

I'll stand by my statements as fact and not anecdotal comment.

On the official report, I have just been to double check, just for you and those other 157 members. My reported mileage was 14300.

Now, maybe my math is bad, maybe you can correct me, but 60-42 is not 14.3 either.

My sincerest of apologies for my "dishonest" 2019 report, that I knew to be inaccurate and never bothered having corrected to place me higher up the rankings.

hijacking my thread with a squabble over metrics. Take it offline or the local pub gents
Here here. Wasn't me that started the hijack.

@W0QNX - feel free to continue to "set the record straight" by PM if you wish.
