ALPS 2008 - UNCLE PHIL

THanks for taking the time, Phil! I check your site now and again and caught the photos before I saw this post. :)

DAN - Sure wish I could squeeze out some more vacation and meet you out at Don's in August. I haven't seen his new place, but spent a few evenings at his old place. Y'all will have a great time as Don and Miss Joyce are the bestest in my book. I hope to get the rest of the photos on my site by next week. I'll have to say one thing about the experience - if you like doing serious hairpins, the Alps is the place to get your dosage up - especially Stelvio! ;-)

I have said this before and I will say it again, EVERY motorcyclist OWES it to themselves to ride the Alps at least once in their lifetime, and do it while you are young. In my 4 trips since ’99, I have spent 65 days riding, ridden about 15,000 miles and still have not ridden 75% of the quality roads in the area. Put that into perspective in an area a little bigger than Pennsylvania there is thousands of milees of the best road you have ever been on in your life. Then ask yourself if there is 45,000 miles of GREAT roads in the entire U.S., period!

Actually it was my wife that suggested we go the first time for our 20th anniversary, she knew I had always wanted to go, but being frugal (a polite way to say cheap) would not initiate it with out some prodding. She said we needed to do it while we were young enough to have fun and might not get the chance again, so we went.

We both fell in love with the region, I the roads and scenery, her, the culture and scenery and both the GREAT food and beverages. Two years later with the Boy’s all working summer jobs and not wanting to go on a car/camping trip for the umpteenth time she suggested we return for another 2 weeks, I did not need much convincing that time. While we were their the 2nd time she said “I would love to bring the boy’s here some day” By this time I had learned not to hesitate and it took me a nanosecond to agree it would be great. So if you can’t convince your significant other that she will have fun, have her e-mail my wife.

We have already told the kids that we are spending our retirement now, so they will have to take care of us when we get old, in fact my wife figures that we can spend 3 months with each, and they will be so sick of us, they will each pitch in a 3rd of the cost to send us back for 3 months of the year.

MAC - Don't put it off my friend! Have you ever seen an armoured car following a hearse? Find you a riding buddy that will go with you (this is very important especially in places where you can't speak the language - trust me on that one!) and make the plans and do it. I'll try to help you with all the ideas/routes/plans that I can.

Thanks Phil. I used to be able to get around over there with a few words of Italian and Spanish. The hard place was Greece. I couldn't make out the words cause they don't write in Arabic!!! But I wouldn't be going to Greece so.....

MAC - I probably think German would be especially handy. We rode primarily in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy - which for the most part all seem to understand German. Anyway, let me know how I can help (and save up lots of money - you'll need it! ;-))
