Mrs Flips recently started a conversation saying “you need to lose a bit of weight”. I mumbled something about “yes dear, I should try that” or something similar.
She then went on and said “that bike in the garage is getting too heavy for you, if you want to keep riding, you will need something lighter”.
I did not mumble my response at all this time and said “yes dear, you are right again”.

Well now I had to think (and have been) about what bike would be a suitable replacement for the venerable and faithful ST. I know many of you here on the forum have been through this exercise previously. Shaft vs chain, DCT, quick shifter, panniers, top box, cruise control, heated grips, engine type, D modes, traction control, whew, let’s start.

Thanks to the threads “older riders” and many others here that I have read, I had a few ideas percolating. I checked out the motorcycle ergonomics site and read a bunch of MCN reviews (love their reviews) as well as seeing what was available in the local market. Sometimes I go overboard and do too much analysis, Mrs Flips then chipped in and said “you’re an engineering nerd, make a damned list with pros and cons”, duh, like she said, organize your thoughts. So first I made a list with bikes with some appeal, the ergos, comfort, weight and personal impressions (all totally subjective of course).
If you are interested, here is my list…

So the final result for me was...

Now squeezed into the garage where I hope it doesn't start a fight with the two Hondas in residence.

Congrats!
I liked mine a lot.. just wasn't, for me, as good of a long distance tourer I'd hoped for...

A bigger tank and just some different aerodynamics and it would have been perfect... I love the engine... one, if not THE, favorites of mine.

I would have asked if I could keep the ST if I lost some weight. ;)

I'll be sticking with my 1100 Bruce, but that is certainly a good choice. Looking forward to how it works out for you.
Still have to figure out that pesky horns install !

and that's how you do it. Nicely done and congrats. Good looking bike! Over time the difference in weight will become even more apparent and make you value the choice even more.

Very nice! So are you selling the ST or keep it for occasional trips? With your chart, the NT1100 has an 88 kg weight advantage- I didn't think it was that significant.
I will put the ST up for sale as well as my CB, I really only need one bike. I also suspect it may take awhile to find the right buyer for these old Hondas. I got that weight number off a european website, realistically it feels more like a 270 Kg (600 Lb) bike, maybe our friends across the pond can chip in with the right answer.

Another wise comment the Mrs made is that she didn’t want me to ride if I was nervous at all, referring to me worrying about dropping the ST in the garage, low speed manoeuvres and U turns etc. At the youngish age of 73, I’m no spring chicken anymore and have the muscles to prove it  I used to be able to pick up the back end and shift it around in the garage, but no more. The Tracer is a breeze to ride and move around so far.

Congrats Nice bike, nice choice. I sat on one before and wasn’t quite right for me but the better power compared to 650’s I looked at should be fun. Curious, what CB do you have.
