New Ultrasonic Cleaner

I recently read a comment by someone who stated that, to save cleaning fluid, he puts small items in a zip lock bag with a small amount of cleaning fluid instead of filling up the tank. Does that work?
Since I use mine to clean everything from motorcycle parts, life support stuff, and firearms, I want to keep the unit clean, so I fill it with water, and place whatever I want cleaned in plastic peanut butter jars, with whatever cleaner is called for that application.
Works great!
I would think zip lock brakes would leak or get damaged.

It works but not quite as well since the ultrasonic action is somewhat dulled by the plastic membrane. It is a good technique to keep small parts together instead of loose in the bottom of the tank.

I have been casually looking in to buying one of these so I am just learning about them. I have read this as well, to the point that a cleaner with a steel basket works better than one with a plastic basket for the same reason.

At the same time Larry states that he puts

Does this mean that this is more theoretical than practical and that the effect is overstated? Would glass jars work better?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking of getting larger than smaller so I can use it for larger parts, which would require filling the tank. At the same time doing what Larry does would allow using it for smaller parts that don't require the entire tank using different cleaning solutions based on need without always having to change the fluid, which would become tedious with a larger tank.

I'm no acoustic expert, but I'm willing to weigh the options. On one hand, I guess that the glass would transmit the ultrasonic waves better than the plastic given the natural frequency of the materials. Conversely, glass in a jar shape is much more rigid and inflexible than a plastic one. So, I dunno... I'd say a thin plastic cup, say cut from a 20-oz soda bottle would work pretty well. It'll still dull the action though, more than a bag. I'm thinking the thinner the better.

Interesting. Maybe if you sous-vide it? Put the item in a small plastic bag with cleaning fluid and burp it so there's no air in the bag. Then fill the tank with enough water to cover the bag/item.

Based on no experience whatsoever I don't know if the bag surrounded by liquid affords any better cleaning than just the item surrounded by cleaning fluid in the bag, sitting on the bottom of the tank. But I'd give it a try. And maybe scramble an egg in the shell in the water as well.

My cleaner has a metal basket in it. I simply float the plastic peanut butter jars, or power drink jars (larger) in the water.
I've never tried using glass, as I found no need to do anything different than what I'm doing now for my needs.
I used a larger power drink jar to put this Honda Super Cub carb in, with evapo-rust for about a half hour.
All the parts inside the carb look just like the outside.

Just got a new toy.........
Me too!
I hope that your are still happy with this purchase because I just ordered the same one.
I had been looking around at different ones but this one is on sale today at Amazon Canada for $137.00 CDN. At that price I figured now is a good time.

The ultrasonic tank needs filled to the "full line" at the top of the tank, otherwise it'll affect the transducers. The energy generated by the transducers needs to dissipate somewhere. The tank will have to be filled close to the line and the bags with small parts dropped in there.

I have a 10l tank for the same reason.. to be able to place several carbs in there at a time. Unfortunately, the ultrasonic doesn't do a great job at cleaning carb passages, which need chasing with cleaning fluid to ensure they're all open.

That's a great price.

No complaints so far, working well.
