Congrats... that was also one of the reasons I bought mine ...for the wife.

But, set up your messgs and contact list and test before your ride... sometimes a new gps can take an hour to get a fix ( usu about 15mins), just set outside for a while.
Both the V2 and V3 go thru a self chk on start up.

I believe you have the same buttons as V2, and unless you bought road service or similar, you have 3 usable buttons... 1) OK 2) CUSTOM Messg 3) black HELP ( not sos) button
I use the custom button as a start or stop for the day, and the help button for a break down messg. OK is just OK.

I set up my test and ONSTOC profiles, and plan on testing when I get home today.
I signed up for the basic service, which was $149. GEOS added another $10. That added coverage for the cost of a search/rescue in the event of my pressing SOS. I didn't see the need for anything shorter than 10min tracking.

And now just watch where u stop....
When I first got mine, 3 of us stopped for a late breakfast at 10am. My phone rings, wife wondering why I was stopped for an hour...was i ok? Told the wife to look at the map and zoom in.... it showed the parking lot / labeled with the name of a big breakfast place...
She didn't know how to zoom in on the maps.... now she does.
:)

Now most of the time she's with me anyway now.


PS Steve; one thing I tell others is that you can share the spot with family - friends... it only take mins to set up a new profile for contacts. makes the cost a bit easier to take as mine gets used by my kids too

I could be wrong, I'm past due,but the SPOT II has an o-ring on the back cover that indicates a strong water resistance. Isn't the III done the same way?

Bigmak is right on the money here. The Gen3 Spot is IPX7 Waterproof. (Submersible in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes) that's about as good as it gets until you get gear rated for scuba diving. I have a floating case that came with my Gen2 in case it falls in the water but, I've never used it.
 
So I should be good with just a RAM mount Application. Thanks guys just checking. I'm just creating my X mass list of needs!!!!!! Yvonne is heading to PA next month.
 
Sorry to hijack here but think about where you plan to mount the thing. I went two years using a Ram mount. Now it hangs from a loop on my gear and stays out of the way in a pocket. I wanted it with me if I were unable to get to the bike after an incident.
 
Mine has lived in a Ram mount for two years. There are generally two schools of thought regarding a Spot. Ram mount or on your person. On your person makes a lot of sense considering you will have it within reach if you go down. I prefer it mounted on my bike though, that way it's always there, always gets a signal, and I can keep an eye on it to see that its tracking/transmitting properly. I assume if I go down that my bike will be close so my friends will notice I'm no longer moving and sound the alarm if I'm unable to crawl back to it. That's just my personal belief, a lot of good reasons to keep it on you like BigMak.
