Terry 'ACL' Hammond (11/19/2010)

Denial....Despair....Acceptance

I am at a loss for words. He will be missed by me and anyone who knew him either in person or on the forum. He was truly good people.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Bob

I have no words whatsoever. I cannot believe what I am reading. Last weekend at Moonshine in his shop, and now this...

RIP Terry.

I found this in a message Terry posted on the I-BMW site last Sunday.

His words.....

I truly do thank everyone for coming,,, even those who THOUGHT,,, about attending... There will be other MLR's,,, but I know I am not tired of hosting,,, so I hope you all never get tired of Attending...

I did get to visit a little more than at the Main MLR at this one,,, but,,, many I did not to get to talk to hardly at all,,, and some I have waited to see for a long time I didn't get to see hardly at all...

Thanks for making the last MLR of the year such a great fun time!!! There was enormous laughter in my shop Friday night,,, and it is always great to see everyone from all groups get along so well!!! We really are all just a member of 1 important group really... Riders... We all are riders,,, and how can ya not all feel like your related with a group just like yourself?!?!?!

Again,,, Thanks... If I die today,,, and am only known for 1 thing on this earth,,, and it is the MLR,,, I had a very honored and cherished life to see so many great friends like you...

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

That story only makes me wish I'd met him more. Shuey.. I am glad you got to know him..and am sorry for your loss. I don't really have any ACL stories other than that I knew who he was..and told another member I couldn't wait to meet him. He made an impression on everyone...

Thanks for starting this thread.. Looking forwards to reading it.

Chance/Troy

Got that call from Jody ... the kind you don't want to get, but thank you Jody for thinking of me and keeping me in the loop!

What a loss. :( I can't comprehend my thoughts beyond that. I don't know whether to go out and ride or hang it all up ... I can't grasp not seeing him again. ACL and Putt were two of the first people I met when taking my ST1300 out for my first long distance rally. I'm certain Putt and ACL are riding some great roads together now ... waiting to show us the way.

Godspeed Terry :please1::cry:

Terry "Mr Moonshine" Hammond

Yep. It's scary just to read it. You just never know. Having attended all but the first Moonshine I knew what the event meant to Terry and everyone else that came.

My Moonshine Board of Regents plaque that Terry presented to me at the last Moonshine will never leave my wall. It will be a constant reminder of the his character and heart.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

Shorty after finding ST-Owners I was sitting on the couch laughing.

My wife asks "What is so funny?"

I tell her about guy from Central Illinois who is riding his new BMW home from the dealer in sub freezing temps. When he pulled into town he passed the bank and the sign said 8 degrees.

She said "Sounds like your kind of people"

She was right!

I just saw the most wonderful thing. After being gone all evening and hearing the awful news and then fielding phone calls it was a long drive home.I really wasn't sure for the first time that I wanted to log on ST-OWNERS. I was just standing alone outside in the dark looking up to the heavens asking WHY ! Just then a lone meteor shot across the sky & passed by the moon and then off into the horizon.... I knew I just had to post this. He lives ! Ride on Amigo, I will miss you but never forget you. See you down the road brother..:biker:

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

I'm next!

It was getting close to the meet at NatSTOC 2009. I had booked a room at the hotel and was all prepared to house only myself. I don't remember the details but is seems Terry was just coming off of some rough edges with stuff happening at the farm and needed an escape. I posted that he should make his way to Spearfish, SD on his way out west. He hadn't yet seen the NatSTOC thread. Much to my surprise he responded positively and accepted half of the hotel room. This was my first introduction into Hammondology. I so much enjoyed hearing some of his personal stories that evening. His restless leg syndrome, his wife, his idiosyncrasies of traveling on a bike. Somewhat paranoid by my standards. He had money stashed at different places on his person and was in the middle of panic as he couldn't find one of them. It showed up stuck to his sock, I think. It was then I learned that Terry could be compared to the proverbial "Bull in a China shop". :D

Sometmes I find it takes a while to warm up to someone. Not so with Terry. 15 minutes with Terry is equivalent to 6 weeks of getting to know someone. You just feel totally comfortable instantly.

Triple Goodness

RIP Terry "ACL" Hammond
... a man of many, many friends and the founder of the Moonshine Lunch Run.

We've lost a giant of the LD riding community. My heart is heavy.
I am sorry that I was not at this past MLR. Since missing the 2010 MLR, I have been looking forward to MLR 2011.
But now, it will never be the same...

But, where ... EVAR ... I ... ride, I will always take Terry there with me.

Terry will... Always Be ... Riding Along with the Wind!

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

I was at the first annual Jack Pine Savage Memorial in Galena when these two guys approached me. One was a big fellow, making his comrade look of gnome stature. They both came up and asked if I was Papa, extended their hands, and that was the first time I met Terry and Putt.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

It was a few years ago now, I think Terry had crashed his bike. So on the forum someone started a donation thing. Pretty sure a lot of us donated, because we liked Terry.

Terry's response to it was, well it was Terry. He said he started crying. I think a lot of us are feeling that way now, at his loss. He was truly a unique person.

I have to tell this story. Terry and I were talking in his shop before we left to go to Moonshine last Saturday. He said, "You know you board of regents have to decide who will be added to the board." I said, "your one too. He said, "Thats not true, I was never made a member."

I here by nominate Terry a MLR Board of Regents member. For all the ..... Well, you know!

Jody
MLR Board of Regents

Edited: I think that was Chapter 16, Section 45 that addresses this ruling.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

I first met Terry at Richard's Farm Restaurant for my first trip to Moonshine in 2009......after a friend and I spoke with a Bewildered Cindy at their house is Casey explaining that Terry Said we could camp at the "Farm".....upon realizing that we weren't at the "Farm" she sent us down to Richards to find Terry....:crackup We found him and introduced ourselves, told him what happened and his response was "Well, gee that would have been fine too" :D

From Terry's Facebook page, his favorite quote:

Favorite Quotations:

Live Every Moment,,, Love Everyday,,, Because,,, Before you know it,,, Your Precious Time Slips away...

Well said Terry.

Prayers for peace and comfort to the Hammond family. Terry's passing will leave a huge hole in many lives and the motorcycling community. I didn't know him real well, but he sure made me feel like I did.

I just got home (a few minutes and eighteen pages of posts ago.) At lunch today I was telling a riding buddy about Desmo Steve and I having lunch with Terry at Moonshine on our way to the Indy MotoGP in August. The richer you are for having known someone the poorer you feel at their loss. There are genuinely nice guys in this world, but there is one fewer tonight. Godspeed, Terry; I guess I'll just have to owe you that cheeseburger a little while longer.

Re: Terry 'ACL' Remembered

Although I liked every one of his stories, I loved his tractor stories and things about the farm. I grew up on a farm and had similar experiences with equipment, so I could relate immediately and understood everything he was trying to say. I think he tried to explain it so all the non-farmer types could understand too. His recent skid down the hill being pushed by two loads of corn..... that woulda scared most out of their skin had they been in that tractor...... it's only funny afterwards when your heart rate calms down...... but he took it in stride and was a very down to earth person. And then I offered to go help him next year... now won't be able to.
