Hi gang,

Does anyone actually make a waterproof or water resistant handheld CB? Any options other than J&M? Thanks.

Thanks. I have a Midland 75-822. I'm wondering if I can open the case and seal with silicone?

Hi gang,

I have used these cases/pouches for handheld VHF radios, GPSs and PDA while seakayaking and these have been subject to immersion while rolling and playing in surf and just on my front deck while paddling and getting wet in normal ocean conditions. Never had one leak in the 6 years or so that I have used them. I can listen to and operate the radio while it is sealed up nice and safe/dry in the pouch. REI, Eastern Mountain sports and West Marine have them. They even have a nice pack for an MP3 player with a port for the sound output connector.

Hope this is useful.

I looked at those and the only issue with the CB is the external antenna cable and possible power cable. You'll either have to cut a hole for the wires or not close the dry case at the bottom. In that regard a heavy duty ziplock freezer bag will work just as good and costs much less.

Oh! When Alan made the original request I didn't realize from his request that he was routing an external antennae plus power to the handheld unit...I went ahead and drew a conclusion from the remark of "handheld".

No problem. I appreciate all the replies. Keep 'em coming. I've learned the following so far:
- If you need a waterproof handheld vhf radio, there's a bajillion to choose from
- You can mount the cb in your tank bag but this leaves the question of what to do with the antenna and accessing the controls
- J&M CB2003 seems to be the de-facto choice for motorcyclists and comes with a part time job to pay for it! Nice but I already have a Starcom and I'm not yet ready for a permanent install.
- I can mount a marine weatherproof cb radio in my left hand pocket door. Again, not what I want.

Anyway, back to my 75-822, I'm actually using batteries for this with the rubber ducky antenna. Works okay for my purposes. I like having something that's removable. I found a possible solution in the form of the J&M PACB-409-15 fabric mounting case and "custom" waterproof cover, except I don't want to pay $190 for it. Maybe someone here has one they're not using anymore?

Thanks for the advice. I get what you are all saying about using an external antenna, but I'm just not there yet. I'll have to think about using my tank bag. I may have a lead on a used J&M portable handlebar audio pak.

Both Joyce and I have the Cobra handheld in tankbags. We also have 3`NGP Firestick antenna`s using AA batteries. We`ve been caught in some rain however not sure how waterproof they`d be in a steady all day downpour. We make channel/volume/squealsh adjustments when we first start out. No need after that. We both have PTT switches using Euro model switchgear...Thanks to Reg Siemans (member here for suggesting/installing).......:>}

I`m not that pleased with using the batteries and would prefer bike power, which I`ve yet to try.

Don't know if this is available in the US but it meets Mil Standards - Kenwood TK-3201 Protalk (Li-Ion) and is Licence Free. I have no install with added AE solution as Im just on the initial stages of my investigations for a design solution.

I don't know why you can't get CB in waterproof/resistant configurations but you can FRS/GMRS radio's. Don't know what they consider different about them.

Glad to hear someone using a CB with the Autocom. I'd read somewhere there were issues with the autocom and CBs. That had caused me to skip the thought of using it.
