Water pump leak
I have a coolant leak from the square hole at the bottom of the water pump cover, any ideas before l start stripping down.

Liquid coming out of the square hole indicates that the water pump is not the source.

The square hole drains the V area between the left and right cylinders. A path for liquid drains that area down to the square opening. The common source for leaks in the V are weeps/seeps/leaks from the thermostat housing and/or the hose connections to the block, bypass, radiator. All easy to take care of for the most part snugging up the hose clamps and possibly replacing the O ring that seals the thermostat housing. Remove the radiator and refer to the attachment for easily accessing the t-stat and coolant hoses.

Also look in here for tons of info: https://www.st-owners.com/forums/forums/st1300-leaks.457/

If you are going in to do the 'stat o-ring, you might as well replace the thermostat (little loose wiggly thing on the stat goes at 12 o'clock). You can go in from the front or the top, the former is easier - remove wheel, fender, radiator and a cross brace and you are there. If from the top, remove tank, air filter, air filter box, etc, until you have dug a deep enough hole to get to the v where the stat sits. Consider replacing some of the oem narrow clamps with constant tension clamps - you will never have a leak again.

Do a search here for thermostat, and coolant leaks, and read some of the earlier questions about this procedure. Here are a couple of articles....
