Thursday January 9th Café.

Good morning All, Wild fires, scary stuff. Worst part is most insurance companies don't cover them. Sorry To hear about your Cousin Keith.
Weather , Cloudy 36 F high 46 F , Wind 5 mph Humidity 95% . Plan for today, drive wife to eye doctor for checkup. Got some tool organizing done yesterday, and cleaned up of two carpet cleaners.
Good day,G

Morning Ray & All from a cloud covered Southern Utah!

Currently it is 26F, up from 19F and heading for a whooping 36F. Winds already from the NNW @ 6 to 19mph.

Glad to see you back Mac ( @motomac) :hat3:

Keith, sorry to hear about your cousins home. LA is a total disaster, for sure! :eek-2x:

Yesterday's run to ST George (Costco) was a success, if you think spending $400 on less than my pickup can handle, that is! :well1:

This morning, both Chris and I will be heading over to get some blood drawn.

While we are out, we'll stop and get something to eat.

Anyone :bl13:, have a great day on the roads! :hat3:

CAUTION: rant below! :box1::well1:

What exactly is the point of having insurance, if they duck claims?
The wildfire wasn’t caused by the homeowner, they (like everyone else) were victims!

Agree, have heard that a lot of them don't cover Acts of God , like Floods , hurricanes and forest fires. The town of Lytton BC was demolished a few years back by a fire, small town, probably won't get rebuilt. Don't know if the insurance companies have coughed up any money.

Good morning everyone

Thanks for the Italian roast and crepes, Ray.

It's 19°F and windy in Rockville (14 mph form the WNW, making a rushing noise in the bare treetops) so it feels like 9 below zero. UGH. It'll be sunny but windy with a high of only 26. Brrrrrrr..

Here's a photo of what's left of my cousin's house in Altadena, CA:

All 76 homes on their block, plus most or all of the hundreds of homes between them and the mountains, are gone. But at least the cousin and her husband are safe and well (enough), and escaped with the important papers and electronics, and their pets.

Stay safe and well everyone and tell your dear ones you love them.
Keith'ster me o'd mucka.
St.Gerard of B.C. touched on the point before I had chance to post.
Are these folks routinely insured for such firecrappiness. There was a chap on the telebox thing last night from LA saying at 91 (!) he's got to start over.

Lots of homes in the UK can't get flood cover. Or should I say affordable flood cover, which I spose is the same thing.

On a completely unrelated note, it appears that choosing to cycle into work after not having been on a bicycle in over a year was a dubious choice devoid of logic or regard for self. I'll add it to the list of previous such choices....let's see......ah here we are....Volume 637.....going to need a new book soon......

I’m in that same boat here in Florida!
If it’s severely damaged or gone, it’s a loss!
I’ll keep fixing minor damage at my own $, but it’ll be good bye if I can’t afford it!
It’s about double the regular insurance for flood.
Any named storm isn’t covered!
It’s excrement of the male bovine species in my humble opinion!
Apparently I can’t say exactly how I feel regarding this…
We’re here in Florida until we can’t be!
Move along, nothing to see here…

From what I saw on the news it is not a matter of the insurance companies ducking claims. It is a matter of the insurance companies not covering fire damage at all in many of those areas. There is no claim to be ducked because there is no coverage. Whether the homeowners can afford it or not is not the issue, the insurance companies simply do not offer fire insurance coverage in many of those areas. The risk level is simply to high based on the history of fires in those areas.

My neighbours who own property in Florida are telling me the same thing with regards to flood insurance. They can not get it because insurance companies do not offer flood insurance. Not a matter of it being to expensive, they just don't cover flood damage in some areas. The only place they could get it was through some US Federal Government backed insurance program designed to at least make it available to these people and even with that Government backing it is still extremely expensive.

I think some of the companies up here were looking at refusing to write in flood prone areas as well, e.g., along the Elbow river in Calgary. It's nice and pretty to have your backyard go down to the river but you get higher than normal snow pack in the mountain and you may get wet. I heard one story of an engineer who lived along the Bow. All the mechanical equipment in the basement was bolted to the ceiling. One solution I guess.

Yes Andrew, we were without insurance (period) for the first few months we had our place. Due to the recent hurricane's, insurance just wasn’t available.
We’ve been flooded, but only enough to destroy golf carts, no dwelling damage other than air conditioning damage.
No one here in this park (Florida) is buying flood insurance, we’re playing Russian Roulette!
The premiums for regular insurance are extremely high, the flood insurance even higher.

That's like buying Earthquake insurance in Kaliforniastan. Extremely expensive and you get little in return!

I hope so but don't know. Now isn't the time to ask.
